no previous part Part 1 of Black Acacia...First time milling for me. series Part 2: Saturday....The first day of milling »

Hey my fellow LJ’s. The tree guy who cut my cedar down called and told me he just cut down a 100 year old Black Acacia. The zoo came and got all the leaves and he remembered I had asked if he would not cut good wood into fire wood until myself and other woodworkers had a chance to look at it.

There are two logs apprximately 40’ in length and @20” in diameter (bigger in some smaller in others). There was a nice crotch but it looks to be mostly rotten.

Is there anyone out there interested in sharing the cost of having him cut it into boards? Anyone want some nice Black Acacia bowl blanks?

I’ve been doing some research and they make great guitar bodies, but they also make very nice furniture, so we need to mug this guy and stop him from cutting it any shorter than 8 feet long. If we can get the logs Ron Trout will cut it at $85.00 per hour. paint the ends of it to keep it from checking and we might have quite the stuff here. I read where it’s related to Koa or Koa is part of the same genus.

Napaman, save me one round for your next Lake Tahoe vacation. For a couple bowls one day.

The wood is in Oakland…The guy currently wants over $1/BF to cut it…I think it’s too high and after reading a fellow LJ’s page he charges less than .50/BF. I would love to give the work to him but after seeing his mill he won’t be able to get it back where the logs are. Bowl blanks from the logs he’s already cut are free.

Black acacia is Acacia Melanoxylon also known as Blackwood. I grow these in my forest block here in New Zealand, though mine aren’t quite as monstrous as this one – not yet anyway. Hmmm, $1/bdft too much to pay for this beautiful timber? You guys are spoiled!

You’d better get busy turning!

Too bad I live way up north – we could use the chainsaw mill to do this!
