Recognizing High Speed Steel??? - 3 replies

Got an interesting question lately provoked by one of my turning podcasts. I have been digging around on the Internet and while I have learned a great deal about high speed steel and it’s many alloys, still not answer. When in doubt, see what the jocks can tell you! I have a listener who just bought a used lathe. It came with several...

So it seems that there is a little woodworking world forming over on Twitter. I have to admit to being a little addicted to it. I am having a lot of fun keeping up with all the bloggers and podcasters out there during the work day. I would be curious to see how many Jocks are on Twitter. I would love to look some of you up and shoot the bree...

Thanks for the feedback and kind words... - 0 replies

I wanted to take a moment to thank everyone for the emails and comments on my blog about my guest host podcast on Matt’s Basement Workshop. I just started in the blogging thing a few months ago and thought I would help out Matt while he was taking July off. I cannot believe the response my site has gotten and the tremendous amount of ema...

The Wood Whisperer is a stand up guy!!! - 26 replies

So there were some fireworks over at the Wood Whisperer site today when a negative comment was posted and a sparring match started up. Marc Spagnuolo is definately no stranger to this site and I believe him to be very well respected in the online community, so it was intriguing to see some criticism popping up there. To their credit, Marc and ...

What finish to use??? - 3 replies

My father-in-law was recently going through the tough task of cleaning out his recently passed mother’s possessions. He came across these carvings that used to be the arms of a chair. He vaguely remembers mounting them to a board to keep them about 50 years ago. He asked me if I could do something with them so they could be displayed mo...

Turning acrylic: don't like the smell! - 2 replies

I am making 9 pens for a customer and she has requested acrylic for the blanks in a color scheme that matches her school colors. This is my first foray into acrylic. I have turned 4 of them so far (I’ll post the project when all 9 are done, they look cooler in numbers) and the smell is just horrific. It has migrated throughout my entire...

Attention Pen Turners, repetitive cutting of brass tubes... - 5 replies

LJ’s, I just purchased some replacement brass tubes for pens and they came in long lengths from the retailer. Since I know that I will be making a lot of this style of pen I am wondering if anyone has any ideas or built any jigs that allow for repetitive cuts safely in this small scale. The repeatability and safety are my biggest conc...

How to finish turned acrylic? - 7 replies

Hey all, I have a customer that wants 9 pens in an acrylic that matches her school colors. Being a woodophile I have not yet turned acrylic. I understand that the tools need to be very sharp so I hit the Tormek and went to town. It was fun to turn and then I realized that I haven’t figured out how to finish them yet. I did some rese...

Motor upgrade? - 2 replies

Has anyone ever bought a new motor for their bandsaw? I wanted to upgrade my 1HP Grizzly to a 1.5 HP for some greater resaw ability. Grizzly sells the 1.5 HP but it has a different mounting point and they do not sell one that has the correct mounting method. Any other sources out there?

Hey all, I desperately need to get a website up and running to showcase some of my stuff and to direct customers to. I have only done two craft shows so far and I had business cards made up at Kinkos to hand out. As I expected, everyone asked, “what is your website?” My mom called from Colorado and said that when she was at the...

Hey everyone. I have been doing a lot of shop upgrades lately and after building a pretty cool table saw stand for my Delta contractor saw, I turned my attention to the extension wings.
