I have always wanted a chair for the yard to set in on those beautiful Sunday mornings, I finally found a nice design from Popular Mechanics woodworking forum and stated the project, I again had an abundance of Ash on hand and although the wood is not very good at rot resistance, i will take every effort to seal it correctly for outdoor use, but I request your advice on this. The biggest problem I have encountered so far is Ash is not very forgiving when it comes to pattern routing due to erratic grain direction and my cabinet file is geeting a workout. Also Ash is very hard wood when comes to planning and takes awhile to achieve the desired thickness. As of right now the chair is in its final stages and so far i am pleased with it. It has definatley taken longer than anticipated. I will post pictures as soon as i can find that darn memory card.

Yo Bill…I dont know about ash—-but I saw your blog from your home page and noticed the “adirondack” posting…so I checked it out…
then nocied in 84 days NO ONE responded…which shocks me…compared to all my experience at LJ’s…consider posting this as a FORUM question…
Well..I also wanted to respond so that it comes back up on the Pulse…and maybe someone who knows about ash can answer…good luck!

Hi Bill,
I love the work your doing. We have loads of Ash up here in Nova Scotia, I have never heard of anyone using it on an outdoors peice which makes me suspect it does not weather overly well. My guess would be the open grain wicks moisture pretty well hence causing premature rot. I would suggest a exterior grade pore sealer (not sure if this exists) folowed by an oil based exterior poly. I am in the process of planning out my own adirondack chair and intend to use a weather resistant species for the parts that touch the ground in hopes of prolonging the life of the chair.
Incidentaly you mentioned in another post (about the very fine chest) that ash had ‘burly grain’ I wonder what you mean by this?
Its to bad we live so distant, I have be longing to play with some mesquite but alas it is unavailable in my area. If we lived closer perhaps we could arrange a trade :)
