Dust collector pre-collector - 9 replies

Has anyone (else) tried a pre-collector, you know, one of those tops that fit on a plastic trash can as offered by Rockler, Wodcraft, etc.? I made one out of PVC and the plastic top to the trash can and it worked fine, I guess. I found that it only got about half full when the chips started going into the bag at the collector, anyway. From ti...

Wide belt sanders and glue - 6 replies

Just returned from a friends house where I was sanding a glued up board about 30” wide and 3 foot long. I don’t think it makes a difference but the wood was European beech and the glue was Titebond II. We had wiped the board gown while the glue was fresh. I had scraped off a bunch of the glue that had fried this morning. When I...

A few days ago someone was asking a buddy for a hand. Seems he had lost his list of woodworking sites. In searching around I found this other lawyers site and he has a lot of links to woodworking sources. http://users.goldengate.net/~kbrady/woodlinks.html Lee

Withdrawal symptoms - 5 replies

JOHN GIZMODYNE WHERE ARE YOU??? Don’t they have teacher work days out there? I’m having withdrawal symptoms and miss the Sunday funnies. Did someone get caught in Boston and deported, I mean exported? Did all the wood get shipped to China? Maybe a Boston teak party? Paul Revere and the Raiders raided the convoy? Bor...

A lead in from the cocobolo pen - 3 replies

I’ve noticed a number of posts recently about wood dust and lung diseases and allergies. Don Taylor led me to an eBay seller for something else but he has the forced air breathing hoods. His store is mostly paint associated things. So, I’m wondering if anyone has experience with the hooded respirators and if they are worth the ...

Mini-lathe upgrade - 10 replies

I’ve had a Carba-Tac mini-lathe for years and it has, and still does, serve me well. But I see that a lot of the lathes now have variable speed motors on them. I’ve emailed Carba-Tec in AU but does anyone know of a supplier in the US of A where I can get a variable speed motor to bring my lathe to state of the art? It also look...

A neighbor just cut down a tree and I got some of the wood to resaw. I’ve painted the ends with latex but is there something better I should use or do to keep them from checking?

Sharing and caring - 4 replies

Back in ‘03 3 guys, alll woodoworkers who had randomly met, started meeting at one’s house on Wed nites to make sawdust (hence the Sawdust2 moniker). Over the years we have added “members” (virtually anyone who wanted to do something with wood) and as of last nite the group had grown to 9. I know that because for the firs...
