Steve's 2x4 Challenge #2: It takes shape

« Part 1: Prototype Part 2 of Steve's 2x4 Challenge series no next part

Getting much closer. The finally assembly takes shape. It is a Krenov type cabinet. Maybe a disservice to the Master trying to build one out of a 2×4, but I wanted the largest piece of furniture that I could build, and this is what appeared. It has been fun.

I am trying to figure out how to complete it. The door is not attached. It is about an eighth of an inch thick. The plan was to glue a block to the inside top and bottom of the door and use finishing nails as hinge pins. The door was also supposed to have long iris type leaves jig sawn into it, but that is not going to happen. In fact, the door may just turn into a shelf do to time. In fact, it looks pretty good with out the door, and a shelf would be cool. Any suggestions?

So off to a final sanding, figure out the door/shelf dilemma, and then a few coats of oil.

Good to be back in the shop,
Steve

Great looking job, Steve!

One of the best I’ve seen so far.

A shelf would be nice looking.

2×4, just as well it wasn’t a 4×2. imagine what you do with that.

Wow. Is there no end to the creativity? That’s quite a pretty piece and would look good with either a door or a shelf. Downright impressive.

It’s going to be a sleepless night or two as I struggle to make my voting decision.

This is awesome.

Steve,

Very impressive! I really like the design. How the heck did you get that out of a 2×4? I’m guessing that my perspective is a bit off because of the photos – what are the dimensions? Really well done.

Hey, thanks everyone for the comments. I plan on going with the shelf and nixing the door. This is just for fun anyway. My daughter says she wants it, and she wants a shelf. (I will have to add some leg stretchers closer to the ground after the contest, as it is not the strongest piece of furniture.)

My whole premise was to make it seem bigger than it is. The leg placement, the frame and panel, and the uplifting curves seem to have pulled it off. The actual box is three 2×4s (about 10.5”) wide by two 2×4s (about 7”) deep by 16 inches tall. The legs are about 2.5 feet long.

The 2×4 was cut into sections and then resawed for various purposes:

Two 17” sections sliced into ten .25” sheets for the vertical panels (3 front and back, and 2 for each side).

One 17” section was sliced into six .75” x .75” sticks that became the four stiles and the eight rails on the sides. These actually became a bit thinner, but because of the way they are used, the thickness was not important, they just had to be the same.

One 8” section was sliced into six .2” sheets for the top and bottom panels.

The remaining section of about 32” was sliced into the four 1” x .75” x 30” legs interlocking each other and into the four 1.25” x 12” rails for the front and back.
