I built my shop in 2006. It is framed in dimensional lumber and covered in Hardiboard with a carport and detail to match my house built circa 1860. I went with 12 foot ceilings and two electrical pedestals out in the room for large machine connections. The floor is 6” reinforced concrete with large footing to support an automotive lift. (Possible later addition.) I have an 8’ garage door and lots of natural light. For heat I use a cast iron stove and burn cutoffs and some firewood mostly from local tree trimmings/landscaping. I have an A/C unit purchased and will install it early in 08. I’ve almost finished insulating walls and ceiling. I am using OSB for interior walls and ceiling which I am still working on. I have some old discarded metal/maple topped work benches that I reassembled which make good working surfaces and I need to get the place organized. In 2007 I built a miterbench/storage cabinet a la Norm Abrams with mods to make it work with my Miter saw. I am remodeling my house and have several projects going now so the shop is a wreck.

Update April 2008 I have continued to work toward finishing my shop, adding electrical circuits, and installing insulation and wall panels. The big improvement is the new tool to my shop. It is an air conditioner. It may not seem like a woodworking tool but about July, it will be my favorite power tool! I hired a friend to install it and I helped, learning a great deal about residential Air-conditioning installation along the way. No fancy ductwork but this 3.5-ton unit blows cold air all the way to the opposite corner of the shop. It should cool it down well.

Thanks Chuck and John, I planned for this shop for 20+ years. My father had a small shop when I was a boy and I loved to knock around in it. I knew I wanted one some day. It didn’t cost as much as I looks like. I did a lot of the work myself and got friends and family to pitch in where they had the greatest tallents, like equipement operating and painting. I got most for the fixtures from salvage places, windows columbs etc. The weathervane I got on line. I couldn’t resist it. I have another one on my house that has a ship on it. Everyone in town knows I am “that Navy guy” in part because of those vanes. The house is old and the weather vanes just seem to be required. I saw them all across New England and Wisconsin and always liked them. All hale to Norm!

Heckuva shop! I’m a little green with envy down here. I thought that was a photo of your house until I saw the interior.

I love your shop. I just purchased Norm’s plans for the miter saw workbench. After seeing your’s I’m anxious to get started on it.

Hi Terry,

You have a nice shop there and some nice tools to play with. You did a good job on the miter bench. You combined form and function. I love the space and the headroom.

And I see that you have two well trained guard dogs to secure it as well. :)

You have it all here. If I had a shop like this I believe all I would need would be a bed and then I wouldn’t ever have to leave. :)

Thanks for the shop tour. I really appreciate it.

Scott, you have to be careful just how well equiped the shop is. Make it to nice and one day you come home, your stuff is in the yard and the locks are changed. So no bed in the shop, maybe a hammock.

Bruce, Got to have a place to put beer. With a little luck I’ll have A/C in a week.
