Debbie: Wow! I didn’t realize that you were just due east of me. Like you said, several hours due east, but still :). Anytime I think of Canada, I always jump to “It must be way north of here” in my head. Guess I have to lose that predisposition, huh?

Oh the space I would love to have that kind of space, I like the set up that you have, looks like a great palce to hid away and play for the day.

Hey Jeff! Yeah, I’m very spoiled, having the space that I do. I only have to share it with the families of barn swallows that we host each summer ;).

I keep tweaking the setup a little bit each year, but I’m sort of limited by only having the one 110v outlet in the big center part of the barn. I have extension cords run all over the place! One day, I’d like to pull a separate 200 amp box out to the barn, but that will require upgrading the house service as well. Anyway, as it is, it’s a great place to play, like you said. I can easily spend half a day out there without even thinking about it.

I looked at your homepage: Good luck on your kitchen remodeling project! That’s something I’m considering for our place too, but I haven’t got a good feel yet for what scope of project we should take on yet.

Debbie, it is strange how those boundaries between the two countries overlap that way. I guess when the map lines were drawn, they weren’t really worried about a nice straight latitudinal division, though!

It does make sense to follow the water line around the Great Lakes/ St. Lawrence. The rest of the division looks pretty straight. AND just look at the fun it has created – discovering that the Great White North isn’t all “north”.

I concede, you have a point there! Geography was never my strong suit. I’d be tempted to argue that the Great White North is all north, it’s just not all Canadian :). For my part, if I could pick up my family, job and barn, I’d move us a bit farther southwest. Say, Phoenix, Arizona? Someplace warmer, at any rate!

I wouldn’t give up my complicated weather :) Keeps the days interesting.
A retreat in the warmer climate would be nice at times though, I must admit.

Thanks, Os! I’ve really spent a lot of time out there this summer. Sadly, the woodworking season is drawing to a close, since I don’t have any meaningful heat out there. I’ll keep plugging away until the temps get below the 30’s, though. It just tries my wife’s patience when I have clamps all over our dining room table for that last glue-up :).

Sounds like we have similar shop arrangments…unheated, 110v…but yours is much, much bigger! I remember seeing this come up a while back…great space. Relatively soon you’ll have lots and lots of freshly milled lumber in and around that barn. I can see it now!

Hi Robb,

I am just getting around to looking at your shop. Yours is a lot bigger than mine but like you I only have one 110 circuit and it is not heated- although if I run a 1500 watt space heater I can keep it comfortable enough to work in. But this wouldn’t help you though with as much space as you have. But you do have a nice spot to retreat to, when the weather warms up of course.

Thanks for checking it out, Dorje and Scott! I can’t wait to make your vision a reality, Dorje :). Scott, you’re right, the barn is a great retreat in the warmer weather. If I can frame off a room inside and insulate it, maybe I can even use it year-round. That would be terrific!
