wood conditioner - 1 reply I could use a little advice. I was about to use a Minwax waterbased pigment stain because I had some left over, and I conditioned the wood ahead of time with Minwax water-based pre-stain wood conditioner. I haven’t had great results with this stain in the past and have since learned that dyes go in better than pigments. So I’m g... |

Canoe bookcase help. - 3 replies Hello Jocks, Wondering if you could help me with a problem. I’ve been asked to put some shelves into an existing canoe that’s been cut in half for decorative purposes. Now how do I go about cutting this shelf to fit properly around the inside curve of the canoe. I hope you know what I’m talking about and perhaps you’v... |

Router table question - 10 replies Here is a router extension table I just added to my table saw… I was going to make a plastic insert but the smallest sheet over at HD costs $72 if you can believe it. I could buy a proper insert from Lee Valley for half that. However I was planning on keeping the cost down if possible. Does anyone know where I can buy plastic she... |

#7 Jointer plane - 11 replies Does anyone have any of these old Stanley Baileys or something similar that they could part with? I could use it. Just pm me and let me know what you would like for it. Thanks. I can’t seem to find them in my area and I’m sure not going to order one in from England. |

Wood and tile question - 6 replies Could anyone help me with a finishing question. I’m making an oak table and I plan on using a tung oil finish (probably minwax because I have some of that; I think it is mixed with a bit of varnish). the problem is for the top. I have made a frame that will hold a tile surface. Will oil be protective enough to keep the grout from getti... |

Need some planing advice. - 5 replies I’ve got some 8’ long oak boards with a bit of a wind. They’ve already been planed to 1” thickness. I’m thinking of making a mission style table with them. I figure I could use them the thickness they are (which I’d prefer) or I could do with less. Anyway, I was wondering which way would be easier to plane,... |

Reuse or Recycle? - 4 replies My wife and I were having a little debate and I was wondering what the LJ’s consensus would be on the matter. We have an old bed that was left behind by the old homeowners, just the head and foot board. Looks like it’s solid maple. I don’t really like the design much and thought I could use the wood in other projects. My wi... |

WW magazines - 30 replies I’m always tempted to buy WW magazines but I tell myself that I can find all the info I need on the net or in books and so I usually don’t buy them. Occassional I ignore my sensibilities and buy one anyways. Today I picked up Popular WW’s May edition I believe and I definitely gleaned some valuable info. Whether or not I rem... |

Drill Press Question - 7 replies I just bought a new-to-me drill press and it didn’t come with a manual. I’m not too familiar with the tool but it seems that the chuck doesn’t drop as far as it should when you pull the handle. Seems to go about an inch. I’m sure there is some adjustment I can make and I’m leaning toward playing with the silver pl... |

How do you store your hardware? - 14 replies I want to make an organiser for nails, screws, etc.etc. I know you can buy plastic drawers but I thought I might make it out of wood instead. Has anyone here done that already and have a good design that they want to share. I did a search of the projects but found little. A picture of your work would be great if you’ve got it. Thanks. |

Router help! - 6 replies In the middle of a project yesterday my router went crazy and started screaming. I pulled it apart and gave it a dusting. The manual says nothing about lubrication. Am I supposed to be lubing it somewhere? Is there something I’m missing? Perhaps it’s just its time to go. Any help would be appreciated. |
