I will enjoy seeing your photo with “David!”

I took my camera to take a photo with Sam Maloof at the Western Design Conference.

But, when I got close to him I got all speechless and shy, and had trouble breathing (embarrasing but true) and only could get the nerve to take a photo of him standing there talking to someone else.

Later that day, I came around a corner, and there he was, just resting by sitting on a set of stairs. But, I didn’t have my camera with me! So, I just shook his hand and thanked him for spending time motivating us at the lecture. Wow! Still haven’t washed that hand (just kidding).

My advice: keep your camera on your belt, who cares if you look Dorky!

I use a lot of blue tape after watching David Marks’ TV show. I look forward to hearing about how your class goes.

HAHAHAHA !!! This is too funny. Part of me thinks you’re a dork too, but a Lumberdork, and you’d have to hurry up with your picture so the rest of us could get a picture too.

And this was the funniest part… so we could all post our pictures to the “Lumber-blog-thingy”. You gotta just love the wives and the way they make up words and phases to suit the situation.

Actually, I was talking about the blue tape he puts on the labels of his glue and finishes and such so as to cover up the brand name. I just think that’s funny. NO FREE ADVERTISING!!!

Blue tape is just low adhesive painter’s tape, Don. David Marks uses it for several things on his shows. One of them is to cover the labels of his glues (Titebond, I can tell you!) and finishes (General’s Seal-A-Cell and Armor-Seal, for the most part). Another is to tape at seams to catch glue squeeze out so he doesn’t have to worry about it affecting his finish.

It can be pricey if you go through enough of it, so some people don’t use it. Others swear by it. I’d tend to use it in highly visible places if I’m really worried about it affecting my finish, but I’m also a fan of pre-finishing (the insides of boxes, for example) to keep glue from getting where you don’t want it in the first place when possible.

OK, I know about 3M’s Blue Painter’s Tape, I use it all the time – for painting. Ethan, I’ll try to use it on my next project, but I’m with you. I now always pre-finish inside boxes.

boxes I would prefinish (and the tape would be a good way to mask off any areas that needed to be glued and shouldn’t be finished) but for larger projects, I’ve used the tape to keep glue off of where i’d be finishing. Guess I need more blue tape no matter what!

Inpiration moment…. build a drying rack with several shelves, sort of like what we used in printmaking! Well, there goes another weekend, but a better alternative than balancing stuff on sawhorses, and any other surface (whether clean and available or not)

I use painter’s tape—I tape up the wood piece for scrollsawing. Glue the pattern to the tape and when done, peel and toss. And supposedly the stuff on the top of the tape is good for the saw blade. or something like that..

I don’t know where I got the idea to pre-finish because i was afraid that the finish would get on the portion that was supposed to be glued and then the glue wouldnt stick (I don’t use the blue tape), but I’ve started it and used it first on my legs I’ll probablt be doing it more often now that i realized that I can.

Can you use masking tape instead? It is much cheaper than the blue tape. Leave it on for a few hours, and then peel off when the glue is gummy.

I had one project I tried the pre-finish on, my panel bench. It worked well in most cases. I had a few mismatched glue ups that needed sanded. That turned into a resanding of the frame parts. I do not think I saved time on that one, but it was a learning experience. I now try to pre-finish areas that are tough to reach once the project is assembled. I am still working on my gluing techniques.
