If you are like me you were likely exposed to this first on “The Adventures of Rocky and Bullwinkle” -so if it helps, you can imagine the Hans Conried voice-over… The Village Blacksmith Under a spreading chestnut-tree The village smithy stands; The smith, a mighty man is he, With large and sinewy hands; And the muscles of his...

Wobble Dado Owners Anonymous: An offshoot of the "Worst Tool" topic. - 82 replies

I’ll start. My name is Douglas Bordner, and I’m powerless over the fact that I purchased a Craftsman “Excalibur” wobble dado. I used it to built something that I am rather proud of. As it was something I built long ago with my first contractor’s saw (Yup, a Craftsman with an Aline-a-cut yellow plastic implant ahe...

What method do you use to remove dried glue from clamps? - 23 replies

Anyone have a tried and true method they use to remove dried glue from clamps? I have a bit of a build up on my Jet parallel bar clamps. The bar appears to be stainless steel or chromed steel. I am trying paper towels soaked with vinegar, wrapped with plastic wrap to see if this will loosen things up. Just wondering if someone has a known soluti...

Glue Up Survey: Tightbond III (Type III PVA Adhesive) - 20 replies

I’m gluing up an edge-grain cutting board today which has some Maple, Paduak, Purpleheart, White Oak and Walnut “tiles”. All the surfaces are sanded to 80 grit (Look Ma, no P — as in not P80) with a drum sander. Do any of you folks see any difficulty in using the Paduak and Tightbond III without a solvent wipedown, and if yo...

Trunnion Adjustment needed - 21 replies

Try I as might to avoid it, it looks as though I will need to adjust my table saw trunnions. I have heard that the PALS system makes this not so daunting, and I wondered if anyone has experience with this, or general trunnion adjustment in general. Thanks for your time and knowledge.

Woodburning tool recommendation wanted - 23 replies

I want to get a recommendation from some of you who do pyrography on a steady basis. Not some little soldering iron doo-hickey, but one that can do quality work (it’s for my wife’s birthday). What are the benefits of all-in-one handpieces versus interchangeable tips? Brand recommendations would be welcome, as well as mail order vende...

Jet Xacta fence help needed. - 23 replies

Can someone help the Physics class-dropout figure out something? On the setscrews that position the lateral movement of the fence, does tightening the screw pull the fence toward the tightened side or push the fence to the contralateral side of the fence. Before I start contemplating even the idea of messing with my trunnion adjustments, I have...

Need assistance from the Galoots. - 32 replies

Okay, I have scary-sharp irons, and I understand there is a right direction in which to plane with the grain, have read stuff in FWW, etc. But it is not until I have pulled a chunk of grain out that I know to turn the piece around or stand at the other end of the board. How do you plane-wielding folks read the “right” direction befor...

Question about thin woods and cupping - 6 replies

I have some small pieces of wood, no longer than a foot, no broader than 10˝ and thinner than 5/8”. Most of them were put aside to be panel pieces or slab lids for my box obsession. Some have cupped or other ways gone off flat. They are thin enough that I don’t really want to plane them flat again. Has anyone out there ever steamed an...

Calling on bowl-turners - 30 replies

I just got two hunks of box-elder logs (about 10” across, 12-14 long), bark attached. There is the prized red-staining inside the logs just outside the heartwood. How do I get a bowl-blank out of this? I only have a 6 inch rise on my bandsaw, and a Jet Mini-lathe. I have never done any greenwood turning. Any help out there?
