All the members of my household safe and accounted for in Omaha

Douglas I am thankful that your family is safe. My condolences to the families that lost their loved ones. I simply cannot imagine what is wrong with our society today – maybe they should try woodworking to soothe their evil spirits. In my line of work I see the worst side of a lot of people, it ain’t pretty and it hardens us all too much. Thanks for letting us know all is well at your house.

Thanks, Bill. The shooter was a nineteen year kid. I think video games with all the mayhem and murder have desensitized kids to some degree. But there is no telling what would make a nineteen year old boy think that “going out in style” would mean murdering eight innocent people with a rifle in a crowded shopping mall and then taking his own life.

I hadn’t heard about this, but I’m certainly happy that the family’s safe and sound. I can’t begin to imagine what would cause a person to do something like that.

I often wonder what things will be like in thirty years from now, as it seems things are degenerating at an alarming pace.

I cannot coment on this illness in our societies.
We had a tragedy just last year at a college another not long ago at a school.
The list keeps getting longer.

Hundreds of thousands of man hours waisted scrutinizing domestic packages at our borders yet not enough care givers and social workers to to spot the problems in our society.

This does not speak well of our leaders.

Good to hear you and all yours are safe. I was just reading that the kid that did it left a note saying “now I will be famous”. Infamous is more like it. Can’t even go christmas shopping without worrying about being shot for no reason.

Very glad you and yours are safe. Every time I hear of a tragedy like this, my first thought is “Who do I know in that area?” It’s very difficult to wait to hear from everyone.

Thanks all. I was at work when this occurred, and when I called home Pam was out shopping. I was fairly confident that she wasn’t in the mall where this occurred, but there was no way to know for sure and there was an hour or two of intense concern until she called in.

Bob2, it is indeed sad that we have our priorities on backwards in regard to the money spent fear-mongering and cutting back individual liberties while the funding for psychiatric facilities and social workers drys up. But the random nature of events such as this bespeaks a greater sickness that goes beyond understanding, predicting or warding against. The morning paper in Omaha had the headline “It Happened to Us”. Seems like a matter of time.

This kid was actually living with a family other than his own, headed by a nurse who had gone out of her way to bring this child into her home and attempt to keep him on a sane path. I wonder where we have gone wrong, sometimes. And all the while we in the US are back in court, contemplating an individual’s suit that the pledge of allegiance and the national currency be stripped of any reference to God. I’m personally sure His nemesis finds glee in this.

It’s a wonder why we don’t have more caregivers. After all, God gave everyone at least two. Where are they in these cases? We are only seeing the aftermath of the fracturing of the family unit. Glad you’re safe, Doug!

Why do those people have to take other lives before they take their own.

Why do these senseless shootings happen?

Too many guns, legal and illegal floating around this country? (Before somebody whips out the constitution and beats me over the head with it, think for a minute…really read and try to understand what the founding fathers were saying when they wrote the passages regarding the right to keep and bear arms)

Too many people with serious mental and emotional problems, swept under the rug, shunned by society or simply not able to get the help they need?

Too many violet images in books, movies video games and television, gradually desensitizing us to death and mindless violence?

Too many people in this country that feel they have no self worth unless they are rich, and powerful or have derived some sort of fame through any means necessary?

Too much media glorification of senseless acts of violence? I am not saying we don’t have the right to know, but take the university shooter for instance. He made all those videos and took all those photographs of himself and mailed them all off in a package to a news agency fully knowing that he will be on every TV, and talked about on every news cast all over the country if not the world.

Too many youth culture icons glorifying guns and violence? Using catchphrases and hand signs gleaned from gang culture? Adopting fashions and behaviors derived from prison life?

These are just observations, I can’t say if they have allot or anything to do with why these things happen. Living in a free and democratic society sometimes feels like walking a tightrope between protecting citizens and infringing on the very rights and privileges we hold dear living in this great country.
