Continued from a previous post Scoooore! Maple quarter log sections/bowl blanks.

Nice fall day. Scraped windows and removed old glazing. With the Honeydew list project out of the way, it’s on to fun! The original logs were big enough that I was able to get two natural edge face grain blanks and five end grain blanks, none with pith to contend with. And I got some nice wedges for future chainsawing, and likely some pen blanks, as well. I’ll keep a photoblog as these bowls unfold. Dang, I love free wood.

The paint looks good Doug. Is that going to be the inside or outside of the bowls.

On the bottom photo blanks one and three (L to R) are painted on their sides which are end grain, the rest have their endgrain tops and bottoms painted. I’ll figure out which end to bore the recess into when I cut out the rounded blanks. Everything will be somewhat shallow as I don’t have a riser kit on my 14˝ Taiwanese Delta bandsaw, and my Jet Mini Lathe has a 10˝ swing over the ways and about 8˝ over the banjo. No spectacular figure revealed just yet, this might be pretty straight grained stuff.

On the original photo on your truck. The blank on the right had a nice contrast between the heart wood and the sap wood. that should be a nice transition.

Yes we certainly do love free wood! Will you be able to turn any of this over the long weekend? I think I’m going to dedicate tomorrow as a turning day…I might try to turn some maple meself!

No long weekend…back to work Sunday morning (heathen employers!). Now I wish ever shop was Mot-Cam equipped so I could steal a glance over my shoulder at Dorje’s new lathe in action.

Yeah – sorry for assuming! We public sector folks always seems to assume the world revolves around our schedule!

I’m not high tech enough to do the in shop cam business!

By the way, Nice job on photoshopping that paint on the end grain! And shoot, if the wood don’t have no figure, you’ll know what to do!

Update! I turned a little face grain cup and this tree had tiger figure. Camera battery was low, so I’ll have to post pictures in the future. Needless to say I have been back pawing through the blank cutoffs and chainsaw “wedges”. I’m saving every molecule of this stuff that I can find a decent use for down the line. Next time a friendly stranger says take all you want, he won’t have to ask twice.
