Woo Hoo, Part Deux #1: Streetside Maple Log Quarters become bowl blanks

The paint looks good Doug. Is that going to be the inside or outside of the bowls.

On the bottom photo blanks one and three (L to R) are painted on their sides which are end grain, the rest have their endgrain tops and bottoms painted. I’ll figure out which end to bore the recess into when I cut out the rounded blanks. Everything will be somewhat shallow as I don’t have a riser kit on my 14˝ Taiwanese Delta bandsaw, and my Jet Mini Lathe has a 10˝ swing over the ways and about 8˝ over the banjo. No spectacular figure revealed just yet, this might be pretty straight grained stuff.

On the original photo on your truck. The blank on the right had a nice contrast between the heart wood and the sap wood. that should be a nice transition.

you may be surprised how they turn out. don’t wait to long to start turning. wet wood is fun to work.

Yes we certainly do love free wood! Will you be able to turn any of this over the long weekend? I think I’m going to dedicate tomorrow as a turning day…I might try to turn some maple meself!

Update! I turned a little face grain cup and this tree had tiger figure. Camera battery was low, so I’ll have to post pictures in the future. Needless to say I have been back pawing through the blank cutoffs and chainsaw “wedges”. I’m saving every molecule of this stuff that I can find a decent use for down the line. Next time a friendly stranger says take all you want, he won’t have to ask twice.
