A question about hinges

Blog entry by Quebecnewf posted 94 days ago 151 reads 0 times favorited 3 comments Add to Favorites

i am building a door for my new workshop. The door is 5’ wide by standard height. Door will be made out of wood. I know I can buy large strap hinges but in this region I will have to use brass or SS.

I was wondering if anyone out there has done a door like this and used wooden hinges. I checked around a bit on the net but so far have only found details on fairly small hinges.

I was wondering if someone in this large group could give some guidance on this search or have done this type of thing themselves

a 5’ iwde door made from wood is going to be heavy. Very heavy.

Strapping hinges bolted right through the door will work. I would drop the extra couple hundred bucks and get the ones with bearings otherwise you might need ten men and a boy to open and close it.

Also your going to have to re-inforce the framing around the door by bridging the 2×6 framing both horizontally and vertically with extra lags into sills and concrete walls/posts.

I might consider two doors?

I guess a sliding door wouldn’t work with the cold you have to deal with in the winter. I know that they also make overhead doors, that you can get in that width.
Romans right about the weight, you could use a diagonal cable to help sopport the door so it doesn’t drag.
But the two door idea, sounds like it might be the easiest and cheapest route.
