I’m finding out the hard way, that in order to become a good finisher I need to be an even better refinisher!
This has been a long road. I started out using a brush-on spar varnish and quickly realized that there had to be a better way. Now, there is nothing wrong with a brush-on finish except that a bar top is highly visible area and can show a lot of imperfections. Spray-on finishes are always going to give you the best finish. I’ve recently purchased a kremlin sprayer and love it! It even makes me look good! The product I use is a two part conversion varnish that cures very hard. It sprays just like a lacquer except for the drying time. No more brush marks or bristles on the finish.

Bryan, I’ve never used the spray systems for finishing, but I have been tempted to give it a try for some time now. I have a couple of good friends that use the spary system, with conversion varnish, on their cabinets. All of my projects are basically small ones, like boxes, clocks and things like that. I wonder if a smaller HVLP system would work for me. Gotta give it a shot one day. Oh, by the way your bar top looks great.

Hey Bill, (Thanks) I started out using a HVLP (high volume low presure) a while back and love that too! This is great for smaller jobs. The only limitations that I found were the size of the cup (constently running out) and because the gun is attached to the cup your limited in your movement. Here is a pretty informative link that I
found on HVLP sytems

Beautiful bar top! (And the rest, too!)
I used to have a spray setup, and I loved it, too! (It was much, much smaller than yours, though.)
God Bless,
Hawg

I’m pretty happy shooting conversion varnish with a gravity feed cup gun, but a rig like that is in my letter to Santa….and darn it I’ve been pretty good!
