I have three nice walnut boards and a nice length of quilted maple, but I hate cutting up large boards for small projects if I don’t have to. So, as the finish is drying on the 2×4 project, I started rooting through my scrap bins for hardwood scraps for the box challenge.
From the bottom clockwise. Maple (bottom), Mahogany (left), Cherry (back), Walnut (right)

18×18 x 18 the max limits of the contest, makes a pretty big box if you want to use your bigger
pieces of wood!

Yeah – lots of small pieces. I convince myself that maybe I’ll turn a chess set someday or turn some tool handles – or I’ll save just the right piece for a jewelry chest drawer divider.
For example: Yesterday, I cut and glued up the larger walnut board from the lumber rack for the box sides, but I roughed out several other smaller walnut box parts from the pile and leaning pieces in the picture. The bulk of those later pieces came from an old electronic organ case that was mostly walnut stained ply but it also had a few pieces of solid walnut trim (base board, music rack, etc.) Even then, I was throwing 3” x 3” x 1/4” offcut pieces from those back in that blue tub last night. I’m a hopeless hardwood pack rat. “Never know when it might come in handy.”

Made good progress last night on planing and roughing out parts of my box entry.
18” l x 9” w x 13.5” h of black walnut and poplar . . . so far. There will be at least one more wood species, but I haven’t decided which one (of those I have on hand)
It’s Gary’s fault that it’s so big.
