Paul's Shop Tour Challenge02

Thanks for showing us your shop. Love the tool cabinet and it dispelled the myth in my head that there were no handplanes in Texas. I travel to Houston fairly frequently and had looked around the antique malls and saw very few. I guessed the humidity was real hard on them.

The stills and wipes worked well. Note to other video enthusiasts, spending multiple seconds on each item of interest gives me time to actually look at it. Audio would have been nice though. The rambling commentary is usually fun.

Holy handtools, Batman! Great tour! How do you like that fretsaw? I have the same one, and it gives me fits…it flexes too much on me and I have a tough time controlling it. Great tour!

Thanks everyone for the compliments. Thank goodness for the freebee “movie maker” program that came with the computer. And thank goodness for the resident 14 yr old and 16 yr old IT experts in my house that helped me figure out how to use it.

Do I use all those planes? Coloradoclimber – No. Honestly, that’s more of a display. That cabinet (without the doors) actually came from a School System Surplus Sale and was in a High School Industrial Arts Woodshop. It came with a rack for planes. I extended the rack and built a collection. For some reason my wife won’t let me display my plane collection in our house anywhere. Seems pretty unreasonable to me. I’ve sharpened and tuned three Millers Falls planes that I reach for when I use a plane (a 9” Smooth plane, a 14” jack plane and a small low-angle block plane). The rest, as you can see, have a thick coat of dust on them.

Seems as though you have a place for everything . . . The Aggie – well, I may have a place, but finding the best place for everything is an evolving process. My goal is to have the most used tools closest to the workbench and lesser used tools further away. For example, it might look cool for all those planes to be in the cabinet, to have a folding handled drawknife and large backsaw hanging there but that’s clearly not the best place for them. I rarely use them and they’re just a step away. It might be “romantic” to have a 24” monster jointer plane, but when it comes down to choosing between it and the Delta Jointer. Delta wins 99 out of a 100 times. I built those doors 11 years ago out of found materials that were in the garage when I moved here. When I re-do the doors with cabinet grade materials and re-organize (someday), the rack of light duty clamps on the back wall may move into the tool cabinet and most of the planes may move to a rack on the back wall, etc.

how do I like that fretsaw? Tom, the deep throat fretsaw? It has a very specific purpose in marquetry/veneer inlay work and works well for that work. I think it would be hard pressed if you’re trying to use it for anything else.

Paul, This is like my workshop but, you have a better assortment/brand of tools. I open the door, on a sunny day, and spread the tools out. I like the job you did. Very well done even without the sound. Silence is golden.

Thanks for the peek into your shop Paul. Where did pick up that atlas cabinet? that’s great to have for storage and to sketch/workout design problems. I wasn’t bothered by the absence of sound.
