Scroll Saw #1: New Scroll Saw

Congrats on the scroll saw. Check your local libraries for a bunch of books with scroll saw patterns. Patrick Speilman has many and they are good. Mike Peters has a very good one too. www.mikesworkshop.com is a good place to buy quality blades. Lowes stores around ct have a good supply of 1/4 and 1/2 inch stock of maple, oak and poplar to work with.

Get the best blades you can find. I get mine from PS Wood Machines. I like skip tooth blades. You’ll find your favorite.

congrats on the scroll saw. Every book by Patrick Spielman is a great tool to learn the scroll saw. He explains everything in great detail. You can probably pick up his books on e-bay, Amazon or at half-priced books pretty reasonably. And like Junior said, just google free scroll saw patterns and you’ll be snowed under with patterns.

I like my spiral blades for doing wood portraits, but usually use skip tooth for everything else. The blades really come down to what you are comfortable with. Try out several different types and go with what feels right for the project. And as Bruce said, get the best you can afford. It will pay off in the long run – you’ll be less frustrated and spend less time sanding and tweeking your projects.

Ditto Betsy’s comment. Take your time cutting an you’ll have a smooth surface that might not need much sanding, and nobody really like to sand.

that would be my tips: try out different blades and different woods just to get a feel for it. (oh and different thicknesses of wood).

This book got me started on the scroll saw when I made a bunch of Mother’s day projects. It’s only $10 bucks on Amazon.

There are some great projects in here with different skill levels. I started with the easiest one and finished with this Moose. I learned a lot and I highly recommend it.

The Moose is walnut but I didn’t paint it (ducking now…)
