I sold a friend an Ibanez 6-String Electric Guitar a couple of months ago, and he called me and told me that the plywood body had two cracks in it. I told him to bring me the body and i would make him a new one.
Today before i got to spraying the coffee Table he stopped by. We discussed the body and a new venture was born. MONK Guitar Company. My first one will be the body of this Ibanez P.O.S. I see five templates when I get back to the shop next week. I also have some White Ash that I want to make a through-body Bass (Neck runs all the way through the body so there is no weak spots where the neck bolts to the body). I was looking at several laminated Necks, laminated bodies… And he has a E-bay Store where he sells Monitors, and he does all the Electronics.
Business is picking up. Les Paul, and Leo Fender are gone… time for the Monk…

Have you made instruments? How did you learn? I play guitar and have several. My first electric was a long gone Ibanez. I want to learn to build them too.

this will be my first… bottom line:
Sticks is sticks.
What i’ve been told From the bridge at the neck to the twelfth fret has to be exact and from the twelfth fret to the bridge on the body has to be exact. Pick one of yours, measure it, and start working.

Good luck with the venture. The guitar biz is a tough market.

ya the scale length is absolutly key for intonation of the instrument, you’ll learn all that just pick up a couple books obi, I cant wait to see some pictures of finished guitars…my true first love is my music, album out hopefully buy the end of the eyar, pre order your copies today…I beleive Fender uses a 25 1/2” scale length, nut to bridge, nut to bridge is the most important measurement, once you learn it you’ll be set, but it all depends ont he neck what you do with the body..maybe you can build be a guitar obi, I’d lvoe to play a MONK…
couple handy links on the subject for ya obi

So, when you finish with Les Paul and Fender, the next stop is Alembic
Their shop is a lot of fun to wander through.

Shawn, I can do that
Dan, Went there yesterday and since I’ve been at a friends house for the past few days while he’s a Didny-Land and I’m sprayin lacquer, I e-mailed the Alembic website to myself to make sure I don’t lose it. The guy that I was talking to yesterday that helped fan this flame showed it to me. And they’re in the Bay-Area and you have to make an appointment JUST to see their showroom.
Drew, I’ve seen Grizzly’s Guitars and there’s a link I have somewhere that showes how to make your own guitar, but they have the bodies and the necks already cut out. I want to do my own.
This all started about a year ago, when I decided I wanted to Build a Bass using my Yamaha as a pattern, only changing the top of the body (the horn?) it protrudes too much for me, and Iw ant it took lok like the bottom piece (reminds me of something Paul McCartney would have played 40 years ago cross-bred with a Rickenbacher)
And Dick? When I first saw yours back “In The Begiinning”, i thought.. “Surely, I can do that (and don’t call me surely), and when I heard your son play it, I was truly amazed).

Unfortunately only the table is sold. My spoon never stops stirring, which means that I’m always thinking of things to make and sell. If it’s made of wood, I believe in my heart that I can make it. If it’s made of metal I think I can make it out of wood.
You have one? I wanna make one out of wood. Do youy want one? I know I can make one.
Whatever it is… cradles, cribs, chairs, tables, beds, coffee tables, rockers, round things, square things, octagon things, tall things short things… swirrly, curly, burly things…
I’m the Wood guy yes I am, but I do not make green eggs and ham
