With blurry eyes, I made my way to the bathroom this morning but was distracted by a loud rattling sound. Taking a detour from my intended destination, I followed the sound and arrived at my daughter’s bedroom door.
“Are you stuck?” “Yes” was the reply and the frantic rattling became faster and louder. I jiggled the door knob from my side. I twisted; I pulled; I pushed. The door did not open.
“Just a minute.” .... “Rick, we need your help. I think we have to get a screwdriver.” (I head to the bathroom, feeling guilty that I can do what needs to be done while Jennifer does the potty dance behind the stuck door.) Rick gets up and tries his hand at the door. He twisted; he pulled; he pushed. The door did not open.
Rick gets a screwdriver and took off the door knob. He then took off the plate, leaving just the innards which remain in the “closed” position. He twisted; he turned; he pushed; he pulled. He then dropped the screwdriver and made a rushed trip to the bathroom—which Jennifer can’t get to. Again, I am embarrassed by our ability to do as we please.
I grabbed the screwdriver and twisted and turned the little doohicky inside. Finally, with a pressure downward and a twist to the left I heard a “poing” and the door opened.
All is well; the floor is still dry; and everyone has continued on with their normal daily routines.

But seriously though, I guess it’s time to take the door off its hinges and plane off 1/8” from the end! Another good use for those block planes.

the door knob, I think, is an original on this old farmhouse. So – a new door knob is on its way.

LOL…Just to warn you Debbie, I wounld expect much out of the new door knobs they are selling. They seem to be garbage waiting to fall apart, or get stuck!

oh no… maybe she’ll end up with just a curtain.
oh wait – that’s what they had when they were little…. Now that she is back in the room (as an adult) it was only appropriate that she got a door!
maybe we’ll just stick a magnet on the edge of the door/wall :)

Ms. Debbie – you could do what my Dad did——we had a knob of sorts – hard to describe it—- but the latch was just a piece of 1” x 1.5” and 6” long pine on a swivel – like the doors of old. It worked well in that it made the rooms inhabitant feel like they had their privacy and safety and yet, Dad could swipe something threw the crack to get in if there were a problem of your daughter’s sort. Worked well for all of us. Now we have those nasty new knobs that dennis spoke of.

Since my goals (ha, like it will ever happen).. but it’s a dream and it has to start somewhere—is to give this house a real “old time” feel to it. The wooden latch is a superb idea!

Thanks for the morning giggle, and that everyone stayed dry. Around here, after a week of rain we were having the problem that Dekker’s answer could fix. More proof that even with a finish on wood will be wood.
