Opportunity #4: Wood

« Part 3: Reclaimed Wood Part 4 of Opportunity series Part 5: Road Trip #2 »

Today I saw an offer in Freecycle for some wood and put my name in for it – and “won”.
What we got was a truck load of hardwood (perhaps ash). The pieces are about 2” x 3” and each 8 feet long. There’s probably about 50 boards.

Thanks to “Mary” for the free wood.
And now, I need to build something with it.
I’d like to make something nice but simple and sell it for the STC children event, passing on the free gift to others.

Any ideas? (knowing my limited skills).

Do you have a good planer and jointer yet? I saw one (6 inch Grizzley) on craigslist for Provo, Utah today for $200!

Hi Ms Debbie;

Nothing like a great piece of ash. Sorry, I couldn’t pass on that!

Since everybody said bats, I have nothing original to add.

Oh well.

ash is a traditional arts and crafts period wood.

it is often dyed dark to resemble mission oak…. .not sure how ambitious you are >grin< bet you could crank out whole bunch of lamps with mica shades and sell them for quite a bit $$$. If you worked hard,... 2 hours a day and Saturdays, bet you could easily make a dozen lamps and sell them before January !!

Contemporay lamps of this period style sell on ebay for anywhere from $90 to $600 each.

I’ve made a few mission lamps.
Not that hard to make with a few construction jigs for the piramid shaped wooden shade.

Be more then willing to help you get started. I may have my old autocad drawings some where. sketchup etc.

Well there you go Debbie. Mark DeCou has a picture on one of his projects of a lamp like that.

End grain and flat grain to give it some character.

I think if I ran across that much ash, I would also be thinking workbench top…

what great ideas!
The first thing Rick did when we got home was cut off a length and run it through the planer. He then looked at it and said “baseball bat”.
The lathe is his toy so I’ll leave that vision to him.

I like the lamp idea as well. Sounds like that would also be a lathe project.

Cutting board sounds good .. and the “big ash bench” is a good idea.

I tried talking to the planed piece of wood to see what it said, but it remained silent. Perhaps today it will give me directions :)

Thanks everyone for the input.

How about some “ash” trays? No, that is a bad habit that the children should not be subjected to. I just couldn’t help myself.

Nice find Debbie. What about table legs for one of your tables? If you want a top table of the same material, you can re-saw some of the boards in half and then glue them up. I bet they would make some nice end tables.

I started making a little foot stool this morning .. and well, I knew I should have stayed out of the shop. I was just having one of those days. And, what did I end up doing? Broke the bit for my dowelmax. .. I knew something was going to happen – but my dowelmax??? OH Universe you are so cruel!!
