This past weekend was a big event for the Roswell family, as we celebrated my Mom’s 80th birthday.
Plans began early in the year and resulted in a family dinner on Friday night, with my younger brother surprising Mom by flying in from Arizona (after a lot of lies about why he couldn’t make it) and with my son and granddaughter flying in from BC (it didn’t even cross Mom’s mind that he would make the trip). We also had a bonfire breakfast Saturday morning (for the past few months, we have been meeting around the fire pit once a month at 6:30 AM… we couldn’t let my brother and son go home without experiencing this fun.) We also had a family potluck on Sunday, with all the relatives invited, and a final lunch on Monday before my son, Joey, flew back home. This turned into a birthday party for him (he turns 30 next week).
So…..... the secret birthday present.
I had planned to just give Joey some money, since his suitcases would already be filled with supplies that his wife had asked him to pick up for her while in Ontario.
But… as soon as he saw the skateboard deck that I built while interviewing Roarockit (veneering press kit) he loved it and it then became his birthday present—SURPRISE!! So my bench idea is out the window and it’s back to building a skateboard.
He has requested that his company logo (EA Games) be put on the board and that’s all… so that’s my next project – to finish his present.
He has also requested that I build him a snowboard (his new sport, now that he’s living near the mountains). He obviously thinks that I can do it … ha! We’ll see.
Anyway, the weekend was a HUGE success, the skateboard was a surprise success, and now.. sadly.. my son is back in BC. But it was nice to be able to hug him, after a year of being away…
Oh—and I now have 10 pages of PULSE items to catch up on !!!

Sounds like good old family fun. Always nice to see the kids that live a long ways off. Happy Birthday to Mom!

Debbie -
What a cool story and blog to share! If you put the EA logo on a board consider making a decal – let me know if you want help. I will even make a decal for you since I passed my shop inspection!

Yes, great way to add a small label, shop signature or logo.
I fixed the broken photo links on my Waterslide Decal blog.

oh I’m sure I’ll have questions!
First question: I think you suggested putting a finish on the wood prior to adding the decal. What type of finish? Wipe-on Poly?

Whatever is appropriate for the project. I have used an initial coat of spray lacquer, as well as, a thin wipe on coat of poly. The key is a flat smooth surface that you can apply a water slide decal to without causing damage from water. The amount of water is very small and is wiped up almost right away. The water just lubriates the decal for positioning and adhesion. Susequent layers of finish will bury the decal to the point where it is often very hard to dect the edges. I would, as always, practice before the “real deal”!

practice? What is that? I thought all LumberJocks just jumped right in with two feet!!!
Maybe I’ll ask the Roarockit people what they recommend as a first coat. I think Ted did mention that step to me but I was still focused on the veneering process at the time.

Great story Deb. Sounds like a great time. Nothing quite like getting the family sitting around a fire eating and swapping stories.
Alan (shapeshifter) may have some pointers for you as well. He knows his way around a skateboard (can you say understatement?). BTW, don’t tell your son about standup paddleboarding or he’ll have yet another thing you’ll need to build….:)

Enjoyed the story, Debbie, but what on earth can’t you buy in Vancouver that you can get in Ontario? LOL
