Opportunity #3: Reclaimed Wood

« Part 2: When Opportunity Knocks... continued Part 3 of Opportunity series Part 4: Wood »

on Saturday, (following our LumberJocks’ picnic the week before), we had a bonfire breakfast at our house and my Aunt and Uncle brought us a gift—

an old church pew that they had in a lumber pile. They figure that the wood is well over 100 years old. We have the bench part, and the back is still buried in their wood pile, waiting to be dug out.

I have no idea what the wood is but it is nice and thick and really long (aren’t I good with measurements??). My favourite part of the wood is that it is “finished” on the one side and still rough cut on the bottom. I just find that fascinating and perhaps I will be using this in future projects.

What will this board become? I have no idea but it should be a piece of honour.

Let’s just ponder what to do with this new gift….

That’s the good thing about having a ”stash” as my wife puts it, talking about her quilting fabrics that we’ve been collecting for several years now.

quilting is indeed like woodworking—you just never know when you will need that piece of material/wood
and nothing it tossed away…

so.. have you “pondered” up an idea for me?

I’m guessing in the dark that it’s oak! What to do with it? What do you need?

Can you post some pics of this?

Maybe a planter bench for the patio? That piece would cover the bench seat. Another idea is a hall or sofa table. That would make a nice top as a start.

re: pix, we just stored the wood away in a dark shed so the pictures, I don’t think, will be worth showing.

the bench idea sounds good.
I’d love it to go in the house but there’s not really a good place for it… well.. actually…... EXCEPT … ah!! :)

Thanks Dorje and Bill …..... the lights are on and the brain is smokin!! :)
Oh Rick!!!! :)

Congrats on the lucky score, Debbie. It’s not often you find these for free. I have seen them in antique and salvage stores for large prices. Some were in pretty poor shape too.

I’ve been checking Craigslist a lot lately, Seems like there is a junked piano to be had every week or so. If thought I could elicit the aid of my LJ buddy Jeffrey, or my stepson, and it didn’t look too heavy, those ivory scales and bits of ebony look mighty appealing. Probably won’t though considering logistics and the already dire mess of my shop.

Just think what you could do with the legs and the piano bodies as well.

I’ve been thinking the same thing Doug. Some of the older ones especially. There are usually 2 to 3 a week that I could get if I only had a truck…........I think I’ll go whisper in Suzanne’s ear while shes sleeping…...Bob needs a truck, Bob needs a truck, Bob needs a truck…..Oh…and a new tablesaw too…..:)

Alright Deb, “oh but Douglas… the potential.. the inlays.. the pen designs.. the boxes!!!”

I’ll take that as a pass on the clutter demerits toward the next shop visits.

Now we just have to develop the CyberLumberJockShare software whereby Bob, Dorje, Douglas, Jeffrey and maybe Obi run around the country in a truck turning pianos into inlay and lumber, and return to our respective homes before dawn, leaving no trace that might upset any domestic applecarts. What a great buddy movie that would make! Sort of a cross between Sanford and Son and The Matrix.
