I live in Northern Minnesota near the Canadian border , in a very isolated area..For 22 yrs I have powered my home and shop from solar panels and a wind tower. My choices in tools are made on electric efficiency not raw power. Being a conservationist is priority one...not the size of the tool and it's horsepower..if a mini-lathe will do the job, that's what I use...remember, every watt & amp you use is made from dirty polluting coal, in most of the US...please conserve.

This will be the 8th year that we have ran our home and shop off the sun and wind. I have a simple system that’s, some new and some second hand. A 2412 trace with a conditioner runs all my power tools. You just watch the sun, when it’s shinning I’ll run outside and mill. My grandfather really impressed upon me the value of handtools and his words echo through my head each day as I work, you are right about how much is taken for granted in todays world.
