Marquetry #1: An age old craft

Hi all;

After reading Douglas’s blog on marquetry I figured I would add a few comments about the fine art of marquetry.

Rather than do a lot of typing here, it’s easier to just provide a link to the page on my site.

I’ve always been a bit lazy. This is listed under the scroll saw index, as well as the veneering index.

I hope it provides some additional information for anyone wanting to give this a try.

Thanks, Lee (one of the two Lees of Marquetry on the site – Sawdust2 being the other). Every since I saw what you have done with those demi-lune tables I have been in awe of your considerable talents.

Thanks Bryano;

I’m real glad to hear that!

I would hate to think that I was wasting my time working on it.

Great website – I’ve added to my bookmarks for future reference.
One point – I’m sure I’ve read that parquetry is the same as marquetry, but relates to geometric patterns as opposed to ‘pictures’.

Hi David;

Thank you for adding the site to your bookmarks. It’s appreciated.

I checked Wikipedia, and your correct:

“Parquetry is a geometric mosaic of wood pieces used for decorative effect. The two main uses of parquetry are as veneer patterns on furniture and block patterns for floors. The patterns of parquet flooring are entirely geometrical and angular— squares, triangles, lozenges. The use of curved and natural shapes constitutes marquetry rather than parquetry. The most popular parquet flooring pattern is herringbone”.

Some professional I turned out to be huh? Now that I know that I might do some!

Thanks, I’ll fix that on the site.

Hey Grumpy;

How are you? I appreciate your comments on my site.

It took me forever to build it, so I hope it is actually helping people learn woodworking, without having to make all the mistakes I did!

Cheer up!
