Building The Holtzapffel Workbench #14: Final Vise Assembly
After finishing the mockup of the face vise, I was now ready to do it for real. I started by gluing up a couple piece of oak for the main chop. You saw me use my new planer sled to mill the two large faces flat. I used the mockup to locate and ...

Thanks, this looks like a fun place. I found you through The Wood Whisperer, another cool site on the net I just found!

Lie-Nielsen 5.5 Bench Plane, and a couple of their chisels. They just came in the other day :). Now I just need some time in the shop to try them out.
I’m looking at their Dovetail saw too. I’d like to try some hand-cut dovetails soon, but the plane put a big dent in my pocketbook.

Mike,
I just saw your letter in the latest issue of Woodworking magazine, and I thought, hey I know that guy from Lumberjocks. Funny how small this community really can be. Great question about the mallets and it was interesting how simple the answer really was. Just and FYI, I have both the round carver’s style and the traditional wooden ones. I find the round ones work best for real detail work (windsor chair wedges) and the larger square wooden one for heavy pounding (mortises)

Yes that was me :). I never expected my little question to be put in the magazine. I did end up getting a “square” mallet and like it. It works really well, even on the delicate stuff. I did a review of the mallet here at LJ. I also have a small metal hammer that I use from some chisel work. I think I might end up with a few mallets and hammers for this kind of work.
