Acquiring new tools #2: Grizzly Planer - PICTURES ADDED

« Part 1: Anyone been to or going to the Grizzly Tent Sale this Saturday Part 2 of Acquiring new tools series Part 3: Grizzly Drill Press »

Well, I got it. I bought the 20” Grizzly Planer with the carbide head.

Got it home just before the rain and have it mostly put together. Man, there is a lot of oil on those things. I don’t know how many rags I went through trying to get the oil clean off. Then i plugged it in and fired it up, ran well, but threw oil all over the shop. I guess the carbide head holds more oil under the blades than I thought it did. I had wiped it off, but it is hard to do with all the blades in it.

As a bonus, it is not exactly like the picuture showed. Instead of the switch having exposed wire, the wire is ran through a brace.

I’ll try to get pictures posted tonight.

I also bought a few of the smaller items from the tent sale. Miter guage, dust collector remote, and some brad point bits.

Kevin, Congratulations. New tools are fun, huh? Tell a bit more about the tent sale. Crowded? Much to see?

Again congrats.

Sorry Grumpy, I didn’t get the pictures until late last night.
Here you go:

planer and drill press

planer 2

planer width

I think it’ll be a great help. I ran that piece of sycamore through it and everything seems to be working fine. I’ll give a proper review after I get everything adjusted and can really run some lumber through it. First thing I noticed is that it is quieter than my 12” Dewalt.

bhack,

The tent sale was fun. My dad and I went and took my uncle and two little boys with us, 4 & 5 years old. That was interesting to say the least. I think they had a blast though, especially when we went to Bass Pro afterwards.

With the boys, we were unable to get gone early. We got there about 9:30 (opens at 8:00) and almost all of the machinery was already sold. If you want to get a really good deal on a piece of machinery, get down there really early and wait in line. The rest of the tent sale is smaller tools. The smaller tools are all returns, factory miscues, ... I picked up a couple things, but most of it I was not interested in.

I was very disappointed in the fact that the new tools in the showroom were not on sale. I was under the impression that they would be. Well, I guess a few tools were on sale, but not very many.

Kevin,
Your lucky there were any power to left getting there a hour after they opened. I did that the first time I went to one of their tent sales and the machines had all been sold. But it looks like you got what you went for. I don’t think you’ll be disappointed, Grizzly make a good solid planer, At 20”s you have a large enough one that you shouldn’t out grow it. Enjoy making wood chips!!

The stuff I was looking for was new, so they had a whole warehouse full of that stuff.

Next time I’ll try to go early and see if I can find any used tool deals.
