With five young children 8,6,4 and 2 yo twins, my hobbies have to be close to home in case Mama needs a sanity break. Started building building computers but grew tired of that. Found woodworking is a true passion. I didn't grow up around it, so I'm learning as I go. Should have added to this comment (if it's not already there), "you know you are lumberjock when you spend $500 on a tool, some article said is essential to a workshop, but have never used it". Part of that is I simply have not had anyone to teach me. I am So glad I found this site to have others to talk to who share the passion and have a lot more experience. 3 years ago if you mentioned a jig, I would have thought fishing, now it would be wood working. I sell mobile utility equipment for a living (also known as bucket trucks, digger derricks, cranes etc). I have several customers who are very experienced and it has helped me build new relationships with them. Too bad they live so far away.

Just now starting to get really serious about it as my only son (the 6 yo) favorite thing to do is "projects with Daddy". I've accumulated all the tools for decent workshop. My current project is building a functional workshop in a small unfinished basement. All 5 kids are helping in their own way. 2 yo twins are decorating some of the wood with crayons. It will be a one of kind. I need to put a diagram on my site (once I figure that out) and get some opinions. Biggest projects to date are a trundle bed, book case and an over the top kitty condo (wife made me stop calling it a cat house). I don't even like cats, I just wanted to build it. So after reading the you might be a lumberjock blog, I knew this was the place for me. I look forward to talking to you. Not sure I can share much expertise at this point but I know I can share things NOT to do. I've got plenty of those. Most recently, don't put that arthritis creme on your sore neck and then go to restroom without washing your hands first. I'll leave it at that. Painful is the only thing I could add.

Nice to have you become apart of this community. There are a couple pieces of advice I can give you if you do not already know about them. While designing my workshop I downloaded a free program from Google called sketch up. In this (CAD) program you draw your base and all of you tools and move things around to get the right work flow. On iTunes there is a podcast that gets you started using this program. I think it’s called the sketch up show. There are also a few good woodworking podcasts out there that are very informative. I am also a new woodworker and I have the resources to take classes now but watching podcasts really is what got me started.
