I first met Steamdonkey when he signed on to LumberJocks. I grew up in the Kansas City area as a teenager and I sent him a message of welcome.
After the LumberJock Picnic held at Mark DeCou's home in the summer of 2007 we were wondering about where to hold the summer of 2008 picnic. I did some looking around while in KC after the 2007 picnic. I found a couple of places but they seemed to be looking to make some money off of the LumberJocks. So I didn’t go any further. Until now.
I had a quick trip to Kansas City where my daughter Karrie wanted to take her two babies (23 months) to visit grandmother (my wife’s mother). As long as the children are under 2 and they can sit on the lap, they are allowed to go free. Since there were 2 children I went along as the second child carrier.
An interesting side benefit. Since there are only 4 oxygen masks in a row of three seats, no one else was able to sit in the row, so we had an empty seat between us.
I called Eric (SteamDonkey) and told him I was coming to town and I would like to meet him and I wanted to see if he’d sponsor the LJ Picnic in KC. I told him we could talk later.
I also called Joshua Stewart and told him I was coming. Josh was going to make it to Mark’s Picnic but his wife was having a baby the same day so he thought he should pass.
I didn’t make any plans as to when we’d meet, but that I’d give them a call.
It turned out that Monday night was a good night so i called Eric and checked out if that day was fine. He said yes so I called Josh and he said he’d check and let me know.
A couple of other people (My brother-in-law and a friend) were invited but were unable to make it. Mark DeCou would liked to have made it, but has been under the weather for 2 weeks.
I got my GPS all programed and set out on my path to the KC bottoms. I think this is where the old KC stockyards were years ago. It’s an area of old warehouses. I pulled up in front of this old building on a dark street and about 15 seconds later a car pulled up behind me. It was Eric, so I guess we were running on the same time.
We went into the entry way and into the old freight elevator. about 4’ square, maybe a little bigger. To get plywood into the shop you have to lower the elevator below the floor and put the sheet goods in from the top. One or two sheets are all you can carry. We entered his floor and outside the elevator I was greeted with this:

The first of his piles of lumber.
It continued.

This room was a friends bedroom at a previous time.

Other items in his shop.

The funnel hanging from the ceiling is just that, a funnel that was used to send seeds down from upper floors to the lower floors to a willing buyer.
His tools.

The finger on the left is Eric and the red shirt on the right was Josh. So much for people pictures. You’ve seen Eric’s Tool chest in one of his projects.
You might be a LumberJock if you take pictures of the shop and don’t get any of of the owners of the shop.

It was at this point in time that my batteries gave out on the camera. So to see the pictures of the three of us. Josh will have to post them.
The current project that Eric is working on has these panels resawed. I’ll stop writing any more on this project.

I asked Eric if he’s be interested in having a picnic at his shop. he replied yes. No dates are being discussed. I asked him to check what his vacation might be so we don’t have any conflicts.
So all of you Mid-America LumberJocks, make plans to attend a picnic at Eric’s shop. Bring a show-n-tell, something to demo. We’ll get Eric to do a demo of some of his tools, have a great time and fellowship. And bring your wives, KC shopping is available.
Contact Karson, Eric or Josh or post a message on this blog to let us know of your desires. Eric and Josh’s profiles are above and mine is as the author of this blog.

thanks for the post, Karson. For those that attend this could prove to be a costly trip- balancing a picnic with a shopping trip for the wives. If they are anything like my wife any mention of a shopping spree brings the joy of credit cards dancing in her eyes. But I guess it is an even trade provided of course that a side trip to Woodcraft or Rockler’s is on the agenda as well.

Depending on the date, I would be interested in attending the picnic.
Eric, it looks like you have a nice shop and a great tool collection.
Woodcraft and Rockler side trip…hhmmmmm.

We might have to start early in the morning to get everything done or make it a two-dayer

Sadly, the Rockler in KC is an “Independent Rockler Reseller” that is only open Mon – Fri 8-5 and Sat 8 – 12. The Woodcraft store has much better weekend hours.

Karson,
Sounds interesting. I’m in the St. Louis area, so I guess I qualify an “mid-american”. I’ll keep watching for dates.

Thanks for the nice shop tour, & the invite, but we have to turn down the picnic,
because we no longer can travel long distances anymore.

I live in Ohio, but always need a good excuse to drive to KC.
My, sister, dad, daughter and two grandkids live there.
I lived there in 1973.
When the date is set, be sure and let me know. I’ll do my best to be there … depending on my day-job
and scheduling vacation coverage etc.

I or we (wife) would be interested in coming. We live at Lake Ozarks and depending on the date or how busy we are we would love to come. My wife is handicapped and in a wheelchair or scooter so we would want a little more information on what to expect when we get there.
Thank You for the headsup

Karson you are always scheming.
OK I’m pretty sure I can make it, no major commitments at this time. Our oldest son is being shipped out to South Korea this spring, we have toyed with the idea of a trip there but would probably be late in the year or may be next year.
Thanks to Josh, Eric and Karson for laying the ground work

I’m in the Leavenworth area and think it would be a blast to attend, date set being all important (I work
odd days) and travel occasionally in the spring and summer.
P.S. My wife goes shopping in KC all the time, so think I won’t tell her about this (another excuse to spend my tool and lumber money) :)

A K.C. picnic sounds great. I’m in Omaha, NE but my family and my wife’s kid’s families live in the K.C. area so we are down there quite often.
Hey rpmurphy509, I was born in Leavenworth and my family moved to Omaha in 1963. They moved to Overland Park, KS in 1976 and my brother and I stayed in Omaha.

Hey Rick, I’m in Omaha, too. I’m originally from Topeka, and my wife and I would meet halfway in St. Joseph, then head into KC when we were dating. I moved to Omaha to marry the love of my life.
Karson, depending on the date Pam and I would love to come.

Guys,
Just received an invite. I am in Warrensburg. About 50 minutes away. I/we are very interested. Count me in. Also, with a 60×40 shop and many acres, I could also host. Great place for a picnic, and beautiful. Thank you for including me.

thanks for organizing things for us Karson. I will be there, Lord willing, as Brad indicated.
This St. Louis connection sounds good. I think moving it from my house to KC will help a lot more people see the opportunity to connect and attend. We will miss the chance to bring folks here to the house, but at least I won’t have to mow and clean up so much this time.
I am looking forward to getting together again.
