Bandsawn Box #1 #2: My First Bandsawn Box

« Part 1: Getting the wood ready Part 2 of Bandsawn Box #1 series no next part

Well I started getting the wood ready. and I now needed to cut the core out of the center section.

The core then had the bottom cut off and i cut off two quarter sections from the top leaving a small piece in the middle.

I then cut the core out of the middle section.

From the top of the second core I cut a small piece off that was then glued back into the piece it was cut from originally.

The top section of the handle and the bottom was glued on.

And so now the basket was complete.

I then glued the main block shut where the bandsaw blade cut it apart.

I now glued the bottom on the main box.

I cut two small pieces off of the quarter cuts that I had made from the center core.

They were glued to the lid to allign it with the block of wood.

Finish was applied and the box is complete. I used shellac, put on as a French polish.

Now to post it as the project.

Wow, that’s a nice step-by-step. What great looking wood, too.

Very Cool! What wood?? And what size??? The wood grain is awesome…and the little basket is a neat effect. Make a great little girls treasure box. Great work.

Well, found my way back to your original post. Big Leaf Maple, and about 4”?? Great looking wood for a project like this. I did a bandsaw box at last year’s woodwokring show (very simple one)and been watching others here. If I ever get done with the project I’m on now I need to try another. Love this design though. Again, great job.

This is a nice step by step post. I admire your imagination. Even with this post I do not think that I could envision a box inside the piece of wood.

Ok Karson…now I have to try one of these soon. Looks very cool. Basket in a box…I would have never come up with something that clever.

Thanks. I tried to make the step X step as easy as I could. I just screwed up and made a bunch of cut and a glue before I got the camera again.

I was able to put some of the pieces back in the correct place so you could see the cuts that were necessary.

Just remember if you need a bottom or a back cut it off before you destroy the piece.

You need to think what cuts you will make and the pieces that you will get after making the cut.

Nice wood, I have not attempted one of these and would not know where to began. Nicely done, now I know where to come when I get the nerve to make one.
