Dusty’s father was hurt while raking snow.
Dusty’s message to me: “He is 82 and had a very very bad fall last night and is in very serious condition with several fractures, cuts, bruises, and other injury’s. He fell off a ladder while raking snow.
He is in intensive care”
May I ask for your prayers for my father?
A second message had this information: “My father is in ic unit in St Cloud Minnesota, ( that is about 100 miles from me) in serious but stable condition. “
Please remember Daniel “Dusty” Jerzak , his sister, his mother and especially his father. I’ve not received any of the others names.

My prayers will be including Dusty’s father and family as well during this difficult time for them.
Again, we’re reminded just how quickly things can change. Makes all the other details quite small.
Thanks Karson for keeping us posted.

Fellow Lumberjocks,
I have been deeply touched by the outpouring of prayers and support for my family and myself.
My father is in intensive care and is stable at this point in time. He is in very serious condition. The next few days are critical.
Several different treatment and medical decisions are being weighed and considered at this point.
I am not a fatalist, but rather a realist with hope and faith.
My strength comes from God and your prayers.
Would you please keep our family in your continued prayers and thoughts?

Well I heard today that he told all of his family to get out of his room and go to work, because he doesn’t need them sitting in his room feeling sorry for him.
So Dusty is back home as of today.
His father had 2 broken pelvis bones, a broken eye socket I think 12 stitches, broken arms etc. He didn’t fall off a ladder he fell of the roof unto the deck. I didn’t write down all of the injuries that he has, but he has not lost his will to fight and to tell the family what to do.

Fellow Lumberjocks,
There is both hope and improvement today with my father.
He is stable and improving.
Although he attempted to use the deck and railing as his personal trampoline, falling from the roof, and breaking his hip, along with fracturing his pelvic bone in several places. He also broke his elbow, ankle, and two fingers. His cheek bone around both eye sockets are also broke resulting in a shiners that make look like a raccoon.
Now the good news.
He has always had a incredible seen of humor along with his razor sharp wit. That was beginning to return yesterday. As the day progressed and he required less sedation and he became more aware of his surroundings and showed improvement he began displaying his whit and humor again.
I asked him at one point after he cracked off several one liners if this meant that we should take his vital organs off of e-bay: he looked at me and said; ” no you silly fool how am I going to pay for this hospital bill and by the looks of this place you should of added your organs because they would fetch good money because your much younger and mine are a bit used now, thus ensuring that I will have enough money to make my pickup payment next month”.
January second of this year he bought a new pickup, hes 82 years old.
Several of the Lumberjocks were introduced to my father almost a year ago when he came down to help build a handicap ramp for my next door neighbor who had fallen and broke her leg.
I guess he plans on being around a while.
The plan is to move him to a swing bed in a nursing home for his long term rehabilitation care upon further improvement.
He did mention to me while leaving to be sure I drove a hard bargain in negotiating his new room and to take the shop option.
He just could out live me at this rate.
All your prayers are being answered.
I am so thankful and ask your continued prayers and support.
Their working!

It has occurred to me that things that those of us who live up north in what is referred to as “the frozen tundra” or fly over land, here in Minnesota, what we take for granted, may not be understood but those who live in warm weather states or country’s.
We average about fifty five inches of snow in the winter here in Minnesota.
Things like “plugging” your car in (it is an extension cord that is plugged directly in to 110) so the tank heater that is installed in your truck or car can heat the oil up in the oil pan or other fluids depending which style you have in order to make starting much easier, is common.
We drive our vehicles on the frozen ice to reach our “ice houses” or fish houses that we place on the ice with all kinds of amenity’s such as bunk beds, stoves. TV’’s refrigerators and large tables to play cards while waiting for our “alarms” to go off alerting us to a fish on our lines.
Granted we are considered a strange lot in these parts.
I am not disputing this.
Hence the reason my father was on the roof.
The snow gets very heavy here and with freeze thaw actions can cause “ice dams” to form and build up causing water to back up under the shingles and seep into the house causing extensive water damage.
The primary reason for the forming of these ice dams is from lack of insulation . When the warm air from with in the house rises and escapes through the roof, meeting the cold air from the outside this forms ice, inside the roof cavity. This in turn causes the snow to melt and form ice dams.
The cure for this is to have properly installed and correct amount of insulation and venting.
The cure is much easier done in theory than in real life. This is especially true with older homes that were designed long before this was understood.
They make a “snow rake” to assist this process of removing snow from roofs. Often they aren’t long enough or effective when ice has already formed.
There is also several small company’s that will come out and do this snow removal for a fee. This can be quite expensive.
Yearly, I have the ”’talk” with dad about crawling up on the roof to remove this snow.
As you can see my “talks” weren’t very effective.
One time I asked,’Dad why do you crawl up on the roof at your age?’ With out skipping a beat his reply was,” If you had 12 rein deer with sharp hooves and a fat man in a red suit with a sleigh full of toys, land on your roof every year wouldn’t you want to go out and check for damage?”
I stopped asking, after that reply.
I should of sawed the ladder, in small pieces instead.
I will do that today after I visit him in the hospital.
I am sure of one thing, he will ask “did you clean the roof off?”
My reply will be, ” for what it is costing to have you in the hospital each day with your own private nurses I have decided to down grade your room and with the saving just replace the roof every 30 days this will be cheaper and less emotional.”
I fully expect that look, only a dad can give.
Oh well, some things never change.

Dusty – I am so sorry to hear about your father (I’m catching up on my reading). Glad to hear that he’s on the mend. His attitude sounds a little like my 84 year old neighbor who yelled at me for shoveling a path from the street to his front door. Of course, the lecture did no good – when we got more snow I shoveled a path again.
I’ll be saying a prayer that he continues to improve.

Dusty – Karson sent me a message, I must have missed this. I recently got my computer back up an running after several months. many message backed up.
Glad to hear your father is doing better, being originally from MN, I can relate to the snow. I was only 5 when I had my roots ripped from the frozen tundra soil. transplanted into northern IA. I still remember a winter around 68 or 69. We would have to climb over a snow drift as high as the roof on the house to get over to the garage.
Sounds like it would be a ball sitting around for the holidays with your dad. Go home with your sides aching and it’s not form the food.
God bless you and your family.

Joel,
Thanks for the kind words.
Yesterday we got him transfered him to a long term rehabaltive care facality to began the slow process of recovery.
Day by day he shows improvement.
He has his good moments and well lets say not so good ones also.
As they adjust the medication and the infection comes under control things seem to get better.
It also helped that he and his hound ( Shriek, his black lab) were reunited for most of the day yesterday.
Today is a better day my mother tells me who just returned from the nursing home.
He over all is about as happy as a child who not only got a shot but never got the sucker he was promised.
However he did say, ” well I guess this joint isn’t so bad when you consider my alternative”, then quickly added ” as hot as they keep it in here, I wasn’t sure if this is a taste where I was headed or they own oil stocks, “
Some things never change, even if they sustain major head injury’s.
