Tablesaw Improvements #1: Adding a bit more rip fence railing length to my tablesaw.

no previous part Part 1 of Tablesaw Improvements series Part 2: Re-Attaching the Rails »

I have a stock G1023SL tablesaw, which has the “30ish” inch rails. It works out to having approx 26” on the right side of the blade, because the rails are somewhat more centered than traditional rails. While this might be useful on a right tilt saw, when you might want to move the fence to the left side of the blade to avoid a trapped cut situation, it is not much use on a left tilt.

However, the rails themselves are quite long, and could easily do 30” fence functions, if only the mounting holes were moved about 6.5 inches to the left, and new mitre gauge cutouts were put in the top of the fence. I’ve had it in the back of my mind to get that done. Since I just got a new Milling Machine I figured now was as good a time as any. You don’t need a milling machine to do this, a drill, a hacksaw, and some metal files would work just as well.

Here I’m cutting out some new slots for the mitre gauge.

And cutting some new mounting holes.

Then, I remounted it on the saw.

Voila!

Next up in the series, I look at mounting a Jess-Em Mitre-R-Slide.

Milling machines are great. I have a small one also.
