The new feature that caught my eye is the quick look at files—where you can actually see the file and not just the title.

You know Debbie, when I saw the demo videos I though: ”nice, this looks fantastic in the brand-new top-of-the-line iMac they are using to demonstrate but wait till I try in my venerable PowerBook”. Well, guess what? It is exactly as fast as I saw, even when pre-visualizing movies that I’ve never opened before and I’m sure they are not cached. And even in full screen.

Beware Martin, you know what they say: “Once you go Mac, you won’t come back!” I bet once you try it you’ll start banging your head on the screen asking why, oh why, you didn’t to it sooner. Jokes aside, it’s the ideal platform for a web developer as you are, because NO other single hardware would allow you to have the three major environments in one machine. You can run natively Mac OS X, Linux/Unix and Windows (God forbid!)

By the way, hold till Macworld in January, it probably would be newer models available.

LOL! Don’t worry about the zoo Thos, if you don’t get it, you probably doesn’t need to know it… (actually it looks like you missed my last recent post. It is all about my upgrade to the new Operating System for my Mac. They all happens to have the code name of a feline and Leopard is the current one, hence the zoo)

I was actually one of the loonies lined up outside of the Apple store last friday (got the T-shirt!). Installed on my iMac with no problems. Everything seems faster (could be placebo effect, I suppose). I really like the screen sharing, and the Time Machine. I finally have decent backups!

it IS definitely faster on my PB but then, I did do a clean install as I skipped Tiger altogether and want to make sure nothing old was being dragged around from the old system libraries.

I use to do an automated backup to an external HD every night at 0400 AM through Carbon Copy Cloner and it works flawlessly—-and it’s free too—. Now I have to end cleaning up that drive and try Time Machines.

One word of caution. If there is software on your computer that you rely on check with the software company to make sure that it still functions with the new system. You don’t want to upgrade for the bells and whistles, and then have the things you count on inoperable.

That said – thanks for the update Jojo. Once our techs at work finish testing I’ll be moving to Leopard, actually I’m likely to get dragged into the testing.

Yep, I was well aware of this caveat but I’m a fairly standard user and I don’t use any strange applications for audio of video editing (those are the most likely be affected by delays). CS3 is working properly and the bulk of my activities comes down to the tandems Safari/Mail App and iLife/iWork with occasional incursions in Office (yuck!).

What doesn’t work at all—yet—are the system tools and tweakers like Cocktail, Onyx, TechTool Pro, etc. But then, I’m sure they will come with new updated versions for all of them within this year.

Once you [will be able to] go for it you won’t regret it, you’ll see.
