Hi! I'm Jess! I'm less of a woodworker and more of a crafter, but since meeting my husband to be, a wonderfully skilled craftsman and woodworker, my interest in this medium has begun to build (pardon the pun). Being sensitive to loud noises, I have always shied away from the shop, but the call to make stuff is strong and I can no longer resist the pull. Also standing in my way before was the stereotype that females were aliens when it came to tool time. Well, I say, screw you and your ignorant wood too! This stereotype was often implied in the school setting, making it difficult for me to take the classes I really wanted to take: shop, welding, etc...Well thank God for college art classes that let me explore the things I always longed to do in secondary school! I've come to realize that as my confidence builds, so does my art. And thanks to my hubby, who encourages ALL of my interests and lets me use his tools!

I am a mom of three and just finishing a degree in writing and art. My goal is to be able to support my family doing the things I love: writing, crafting, and building. I am inspired by clean lines, modern furniture and pieces, people who do what they love and love what they do, and aren't afraid to blur the line between reality and creative fantasy. I am also inspired by my little guys who aren't inhibited by all the things us grown-ups are. And my girl, who is happy all the time despite all the odds stacked against her. Live, love, laugh!

Welcome to LJ’s…and congrats on busting through the “wood ceiling”...as a high school teacher (and part of that corrupt bureaucracy—-dang I cant evn spell it)...I often tell “kids”...when you get to college…take AT LEAST one class for exploration each semester…something that has nothing to do with your “intended” major…and you will get soooo much more out of your college experience—-no to mention life…for me in college it was photography…and I wanted to take ceramics soooo bad and regret never getting around to it…

Good luck with your venture into the shop..and most importantly life…maybe your story will get my wife into the shop with me more…thanks for sharing your story and hope to see your progress in the shop!

LJ’s is truly a great place to share and learn!

Minneapolis is a great area for supporting the arts.

I have had some good conversations with women regarding shop oriented arts. Many are intimidated by the machinery and the “weight” of things. This is a bit of a shame because women seem to have a better sense of design.

Love your spirit about it all.
