Back in the Groove!

Ah Huck’s back! In the shop that is. Took the hand longer to heal that I had first hoped, but all is well now. It amazes me that when you loose the ability to do something that you really enjoy how great of a feeling it is to get back in saddle. So I am back on track with this futon that I am making and had plenty of time to make design changes and this thing is turning out a heck of a lot better than I thought. I hope to have some pictures soon on this. I hate to disappoint everyone I did go through with the pocket holes and glue. I am not giving up on mortise and tenons I wanted a quick joint and to my surprise this joint is pretty strong. I really appreciate the well wishes that I received from everyone it was really nice of you all.

Hucklerry’s got his groove on!

Hey, you might have missed some good discussion on the pocket hole joinery from a blog I did a couple days ago. I use it and am not ashamed to say so. Have I given up M&T joinery? Of course not! But there is a time and place for the modern joinery methods and you have discovered this.

The piece you are working on could use contrasting plugs as a joinery feature.

Anyway here is the link and happy healing! http://lumberjocks.com/jocks/toddc/blog/2656

Don’t be ashamed that you used pocket screw joinery….hold your head high! Todd I think we need to to start a “proud to use pocket screws” support group. I use pocket screws…there I said it and I am proud…sure I could have used other more complicated joinery, but I choose to drill some funny looking holes and drive screws..and I’m glad i did!

Heal well, Huck!

I’ve punched so many pocket holes in the last week that I’m nearly sick of them, NOT. They put things together pretty handy. Will they replace mortise and tenon joinery? Nope, but they will do a good job when used in the right place.

Welcome back Huck! I use pocket hole joinery quite a lot. I’m still not sold that it’s the best for the futon application, but I don’t have any testing to back it up. So I say go for it.

I’m glad you are back and look forward to more projects and posts. Always good to see someone excited about this grand adventure.
