Cross for my Father In Law #4: Attempted save but ultimately a learning step

SO I attempted to fix the mahogany cross in some of the ways you have all sugested and some may have worked if I wasn’t such an oaf and didn’t baredown to hard and break one of the arms of the cross off. (no not intentional I guess I just pushed to hard).....

But on an up note I purchased a new router and bits this past weekend at the woodcraft sale!!!!! I was wrking on cutting out the cross on a shiny new plank of mahogany earlier this week and blew out the 6 hole plug surge protector that the bandsaw was plugged into this took out half the power in my little shop so I ran an extention cord so I could finish the cuts (2) on the cross but have not been able to use the new router yet.. hope to resolve this issue this weekend at some point and get some pics posted.

As for the broken parts to the maogany cross v1 I will use them as practice and test scraps for some of the suggestions I have gotten on repairing the router burns chips and chewing. So no it really wasn’t a failure just another step in the learning process of this hobby I have recently started…...

I have to take time to thank everyone for posting on my last blog, and reminding me that I am new and that it takes baby steps wen learning something new….. SO thanks guys and gals for your input.

Ok so I attempted to route the Mahogany cross and the router and myself really chewed up the wood…. this is my first time working in mahogany but I did all the same steps at I took with the pine cross.. the router burned the wood and chewed up the cut pretty bad… not sure why…. was I working too fast it the router and bit that sub-par?? Its a ryobe cordless trim router and a ryobe bit (I said I was a noob :D) So now I have a couple choices… 1. give up on getting this done for the weekend and bring it to him in september when my wife and I are going to visit him in Vermont…. 2. finish the Pine prototype and give it to him I don’t think I can start a new cross (tomorrow I am too annoyed to do it tonight) and finish it before Saturday night when he leaves… I really don’t want to spend the time he is here in the workshop…. owell what do you guys think??

Cross for my Father In Law #1: Rough design and prototype

My Father- in- law is coming to vist next weekend from Vermont, he is a 4th Degree Knight of Columbus and is very involved with the Catholic church. Well the guy was nice enough to let me marry his daughter so I figured I would make him a little something to take back home with him. ( he is going by plane so it has to be smallish)

SO here we go…..

First the rough cut on the bandsaw

It is out of pine…. I decided to make is a bit thiner as the Cross was cut from 3/4 stock it is now close to 1/2”

Then I routed the edge using an Ogee bit…. it came out pretty cool I think…..

I am debating if I want to remake the Cross out of Oak or Mahogany or if I should give him the prototype I am working on( once it is finished) All in All I would say it was a good time in the shop today…............

Be safe everyone and thanks for reading!!!!

Bandsaw Adventure #6: All Together now

The bandsaw is completely together with the miter and fence holder… the Fince holder is not so great but the miter holder seems to work well. I did some test cuts with the stock blade… not bad pretty smooth… did not check the drift yet … wasn’t seriously testing the saw…. not sure I could really even wright a real review for it as I am so new to bandsaws and woodworking… I also haven’t done a nickel test yet but I will do that in the am.

On dust collection… I would say a dust collector is needed… the few little cuts I made created a fair amout of dust. /so off to woodcraft I go for a dust collector (there goes the rest of the stimulous check… I think I only really stemulated woodcraft LOL) But in all honesty the crew at the woodcraft have been GREAT!!!!! Gave me a deal on the dust collector, hose and fittings I needed along with some plans a picked up. My wife was with me( I have learned I actually get much more when she is with me) sugested that I get an anti fatigue mat ( I have been having issues with my feet in the last few monthes something about kicking a workbench) so the manager I have been dealing with threw it in for me. Did I mention the staff there is awesome, they have really treated me great and are very informative and patient with me when I ask noob questions.

So its been a good day!!!!!

Bandsaw Adventure #5: Set-up

I unboxed the saw an with help from my father on Sunday got the saw body attached and the riser block installed. My wife’s birthday was Tuesday, so my family took us out to dinner then did the cake and presents thing at my Wife and my house. (hence how I got my father to come help me).

The saw sat mostly together on Monday night as friends of our recently became parents and they wanted a night out with the baby “McLovin” ( I love my friends) and we are the most laid back of all thier friends soo little Mclovin had his first trip to Beel O’Gradys and Marble Slab Icecream.

Tuesday had the Saw sitting in it’s sad state while I took the wife to dinner and treated her to a bottle of 12yr Jamesson’s ( I married a Wiskey drinkin woman ) then some Tv shows she likes to watch.

So that leaves tonight…. Riser block parts are now all on the saw, blower hose is set up, Blade is on tensioned and tracking properly ….... and this bring me to my first lesson in not hurring in the shop and pushing to do more once you are tired…. not a big thing just a small cut… I was setting up the roller barring guides and instead of using the hex wrench away from the saw blade I was tuning the wrech in front of the blade in a downward motion….slipped cut myself on the outside of my thumb… hurt like helck bled some… I felt like an idiot because it hit me how dumb I was being and how I was just pushing to get a little bit more done before bed….. Lession Learned…..

The worse part was having to tell my wife what I had done and how dumb I knew it was…. She got upset at first.. she is kind of scared of this new hobby of mine. I showed her it was a little cut and that my fingers were still there… Then she looked at me and said well… you wont do that again will you??

I said nope.

Be safe everyone….. and Goodnite

Bandsaw Adventure #4: Update - Really good news

Well I decided (read the wife decided) that I had waited long enough and that the bandsaw should go back and I would pick from one in stock today…. SO we went down to woodcraft this afternoon while we were on the way to a BBQ some of my wifes friends were throwing (woodcraft is in the same area as the friends) The manager at woodcraft was excellent as really he has been since this all started.. we unloaded the bandsaw in the back and he showed me the s14” saws they had in stock….. well and one 16” saw ( a temtation but we were in my wifes Tucson so would have never fit it in the car.) the 14s in stock were the regular model Jet closed stand, the rikon deluxe, Delta X5 and a Powermatic…...

Decided against the Rikon as it is too simular to the very fist saw I had bought (craftsman pro 14”) that I couldn’t get to hold tention or track properly so the Rikon was out.

I really wanted larger then the 1hp that the Jet had so the jet saw was out…....I am not doing resawing yet but I have learned that buying more then you need at this point is better then buying twice.

So we are down to the Delta or the Powermatic.. which I had not looked at before because the Jet Deluxe we so much cheaper and had all that I was looking for…....

So I was really looking at the delta as I felt that the Powermatic was out of my price range…. my wife walks over to the powermatic and asks “what about this one” I grinned and showed her the price and she said “OH” well she then asked what comes with the delta saw and I explained well the saw…. she then asked me what comes with the powermatic…. fence, miter, light, chip blower and as we were talking the woodcraft maneger tells us that they are giving the riser blocks away with the saws…. then My dear wife asked how much it would cost to buy the assessories for the delta saw that the powermatic came with.. which I explained I didn’t need all of the extras now…. she insisted on finding out…. well the total came out a little higher for the delta + assessories…............

So my great loving wonderful wife tells me to get the Powermatic….. so I did… then at the regester she asked if they had the mobile base instock…. and bought that for me too…. Did I mention how cool my wife is??? (we are still pretty much newly weds 1yr and a half today I was reminded)

The downside is having me shiny new toy in the back of her little SUV and haveing to go to a BBQ with people I really didn’t know and not getting the saw out and setting it up…... owell she has been friends with these people for yrs and yrs and they all ended up being really cool people.

I know this is long winded and all…. will be posting pics and setup blog at some point over the next few days…..

Bandsaw Adventure #3: Update - No good news

I called woodcraft last Friday as it was 3 weeks after the order was to be put in for the new base. The update at that point was no update…. The woodcraft manager said he was looing into what the base was not shipped with the stock order. Well today (4 weeks after purchase and report of the issue) the manager at woodcaft calls me a few min. ago…. the reason for the delay is…. the base is on backorder until sometime in July….. While I know this is not the fault of Woodcraft but I am frustraited beyond belief….. having the base and the body of the bandsaw in the floor of my tiny shop has really prevented me from starting any real projects and it has really discoraged me from this new hobbie I have chosen to pick up….

Woodcraft has said they wold take the saw back completely if I wanted or I could wait it out until the base comes in. I am not sure what I would like to do… I really do like the Bandsaw I bought but at this point 10 days has turned into 4 weeks and now is being put off to sometime next month.. I am kind of starting to wonder if this badnsaw will ever come in and be usable….

So I am really debaiting taking the whole saw back and picking out a saw that is in stock so I can get to making some saw dust… What would you guys do????

Ok so I got off the phone with Woodcraft…. they said no problem… the manager was placing a stock order with Jet today and will include my new base in the order which should come on a pallet so there is much less a chance of damage….. the down side 10 days to wait…. but I think I am going to put the saw togeather tonight just to check to make sure the rest of the saw is in working order…... I am sure it is…... so part 3 when the new base comes in…...
