Hi Guys: Well; thanks—I didn’t even say anything and already I feel welcome. I don’t have any great wisdom or experience I can share so as I go forward I’ll mostly be tapping the storehouse of knowledge than you guys have amassed over the years. I’m in the process of making a small box and will post some pics when it’s done. I’m also making a chess board using veneer (unfortunately not all the squares are perfect but not too bad for a first try). I haven’t glued the veneer chess board sheet to the substrate yet—am up in the air as to what glue to use—the squares are burl walnut and birds-eye maple and even after softening and pressing the veneer sheets, they still aren’t completely flat. I was thinking about using epoxy but am afraid that the glue may seep through a couple tiny holes and screw things up. Contact cement is an option but not sure how well that will work. I think I might just go with the “Better Bond” cold press adhesive I got from Joe Woodworker and try to clamp everything down as good as I can. As a kid I did some rifle stocks from blanks which turned out pretty nice and have experience with most tools but not in an educated way. The cheesy (portable) table saw I have almost scares me with the screeching sound—nothing like the whirring purr of the one in high school wood shop. I’ve been researching band saws (I’m interested in resawing to make thin boards to make small boxes) and the Jet or Delta seem like good machines. The Laguna (LT16 for example) looks ideal for resawing but still undecided. Any way; thanks again for the welcome. I’m trying to work my way into retirement by next year when I hope to find more time for this new venture.

I look forward to seeing your boxes! I just scored some great wood for some of my own box projects, and a Ridgid planer to make em shine. Look on Craigslist.org and you may find some great deals on woodworking tools. Invest in reading materials, too! Amazon has some great woodworking books at screaming deals! I would highly reccoment The Collins Complete Woodworker , by Woodworker’s Journal. It gives a brief, but concise, explanation of most, if not akk eth woodworking tools you wil use, as well as the history of woodworking, styles, and explanation of wood. Great deal for under $30.00 qt Amazon!

I know this isn’t the place to ask but …. wtf; What’s with the way our posts are displayed—that is: even when I hit the carriage return and make a new paragraph, after I hit the “Post this comment” it is displayed with all the words strung together (without paragraph separation). It changes what you say.

That is pretty much standard web behavior. You can use some html tags such as the break tag.

You can use a couple of these minus the spaces next to the brackets. Also, try preview to see what it will look like.

It supports a limited set of HTML tags. Martin could speak more to the extent they are supported.

Herb I just use extra carriage returns to separate the parts of a paragraph.

A word processor it is not.

A carriage return is a new line and extra carriage return is a new paragraph.
