Hi all: I'm the proverbial jack-of-all-trades/master-of-none. 56 years old and gone threw 40 jobs, many hobbies and pursuits (but few women -- a few years ago divorced after 30 years - wonderful girl: she said "My feelings have changed" - yikes -- almost miss the "clean up your room" line). -- I like to make art (oil paint, marbles, pottery) and have always loved beautiful wood (refinished some furniture) but don't really know jack -- except I'm a sanding fool (love to get that shine -- not sure the best way - I've just used water to raise the grain and keep sanding till the wood becomes level and get beyond the 600 grit to where the bare wood shines). I'm interested in lacquers but am only real familiar with polyurethane. Epoxy is my favorite glue.
Been with the PA Dept. of Labor & Industry for the last 20 years as a computer programmer. Worked a bunch of menial slave labor jobs, restaurants, construction & remodeling, welder, machinist, Orkin exterminator, managed Gordon's Jeweler's and Burger King, machine operator making chain, made coffins at York Casket, cut dough at the pretzel factory, drove tractor-trailer with my brother for six months -- to name a few. Working with contact cement on a 4x8 sheet of Formica in bathroom remodeling was a learning experience (get it right the first time) - working the vertical is harder than the horizontal. But counter tops is about all the router experience I have (zip-zip, you're done) .
Enjoy playing golf, am a very good chess player and pool shooter - play guitar and write poetry/songs. Have life stories that can bring tears to your eyes (but I figure everyone has that). Enjoy friends and downing a few brewskies on the weekend. Made some pretty neat marbles but as with the paintings, have given them all away. The stuff I make I like to give away. I'm not efficient enough to make it pay (like Norm -- well, if I had a million dollar shop like that maybe I could).
Looking forward to learning some tricks of the trade.

Hi Guys: Well; thanks—I didn’t even say anything and already I feel welcome. I don’t have any great wisdom or experience I can share so as I go forward I’ll mostly be tapping the storehouse of knowledge than you guys have amassed over the years. I’m in the process of making a small box and will post some pics when it’s done. I’m also making a chess board using veneer (unfortunately not all the squares are perfect but not too bad for a first try). I haven’t glued the veneer chess board sheet to the substrate yet—am up in the air as to what glue to use—the squares are burl walnut and birds-eye maple and even after softening and pressing the veneer sheets, they still aren’t completely flat. I was thinking about using epoxy but am afraid that the glue may seep through a couple tiny holes and screw things up. Contact cement is an option but not sure how well that will work. I think I might just go with the “Better Bond” cold press adhesive I got from Joe Woodworker and try to clamp everything down as good as I can. As a kid I did some rifle stocks from blanks which turned out pretty nice and have experience with most tools but not in an educated way. The cheesy (portable) table saw I have almost scares me with the screeching sound—nothing like the whirring purr of the one in high school wood shop. I’ve been researching band saws (I’m interested in resawing to make thin boards to make small boxes) and the Jet or Delta seem like good machines. The Laguna (LT16 for example) looks ideal for resawing but still undecided. Any way; thanks again for the welcome. I’m trying to work my way into retirement by next year when I hope to find more time for this new venture.

Welcome Aboard!
Good to have a jack-of-all-trades, master-of-none onboard! I resemble that remark!
I look forward to seeing your boxes! I just scored some great wood for some of my own box projects, and a Ridgid planer to make em shine. Look on Craigslist.org and you may find some great deals on woodworking tools. Invest in reading materials, too! Amazon has some great woodworking books at screaming deals! I would highly reccoment The Collins Complete Woodworker , by Woodworker’s Journal. It gives a brief, but concise, explanation of most, if not akk eth woodworking tools you wil use, as well as the history of woodworking, styles, and explanation of wood. Great deal for under $30.00 qt Amazon!
God Bless,
Hawg

I know this isn’t the place to ask but …. wtf; What’s with the way our posts are displayed—that is: even when I hit the carriage return and make a new paragraph, after I hit the “Post this comment” it is displayed with all the words strung together (without paragraph separation). It changes what you say.

That is pretty much standard web behavior. You can use some html tags such as the break tag.
< /br >
You can use a couple of these minus the spaces next to the brackets. Also, try preview to see what it will look like.

It supports a limited set of HTML tags. Martin could speak more to the extent they are supported.

Herb I just use extra carriage returns to separate the parts of a paragraph.
A word processor it is not.
A carriage return is a new line and extra carriage return is a new paragraph.
