Would this qualify as junk recycled wood?

Blog entry by GaryK posted 40 days ago 407 reads 0 times favorited 33 comments Add to Favorites

A lot of you probably have noticed that I havn’t been posting a lot lately. Well after 10 days in europe I have only being able to post every once in a while when I got the chance.

Look like I have less then 20 days to make something for the summer awards contests. I was wondering if you guys (and gals) thought if this would qualify as junk recycled wood?

I was in a machine shop about a month ago and they had just got a new machine from some place in Asia. It came packed in a crate of some type of real hard wood. So I grabbed a couple of pieces:

I have no idea what kind of wood it is.
.

.
.
The oak dowel is a piece I accidently sat on.

Would you think it qualifies?

I would say that since the wood was not designed to be furniture, they considered it “junk” so go for it!

To me it qualifies. Since it is from a pallet it probably would have been tossed in the dumpster or converted into btus. Go for it!!!!!

By the way I wondered what was going on with you. I just assumed that you were on either tied up on something around the house or on vacation. I am sure you enjoyed yourself. Glad to have you back.

The wood qualifies, Gary…no doubt about that.

I’m sorry you didn’t read the fine print of the contest rules, though. It clearly states that any Texas resident who has traveled to Europe in the last 6 months is not eligible to enter. Oh well, maybe next time. :-)

Hey guy welcome back …your absence was noticed and I for one, was afraid you or a family member was ill or had been involved in a tragedy of some sort…..or that you had decided that LJ’s took up to much of your time. THAT would have been a real tragedy. where would we be without one of our great mentors. As far as the wood goes you didn’t even half to ask and you know that. WELCOME back on line, you most certainly were missed.

The pallet sure qualifies! I’ve recycling pallets from work for quite a while now and it is amazing what they make pallets out of; red oak, white oak, cyprus and a few that I swear are mahogany.

Now, if I had known that all I ahd to do was sit on some “good” wod and break it to qualify for the contest…

what kind of wood? I can Identify two of them – “broken”.

I’m sure you’ll make something utterly gorgeous with them. I haven’t started yet either, if we’d known you’ve been handicapped for time, we all might have been motivated to start when Martin fired the starting gun.

Looks like Apitong to me, that stuff is extremely hard! It is mostly used on flatbed trailers in the 18 wheeler variety. Make sure you don’t ruin a good WW2 blade on it!!
