Bookcase for the Challange

Blog entry by GaryK posted 86 days ago 461 reads 0 times favorited 21 comments Add to Favorites

Well, here is my entry for the bookcase challenge.

It’s meant to be constructed using standard frame and panel construction using solid wood, except
for the back which would be plywood.

I have never seen a bookcase on wheels before, so that dictated the smaller size. Too heavy and it
wouldn’t roll very easily on carpet. The advantages to a bookcase on wheels is the ability to move it
from room to room or around the room without having to empty it.

The reason for it opening and closing is to give you the option of keeping the books out of view or
out of reach of small children (of which I am the proud parent of one). Wheels on the main case as
well as the doors makes it easy to move or open.

The curved section can be built any number of ways. Veneered bending plywood, kerf bending,
lamination… For those the might not like the challenge of the curved surface I have added a drawing
showing it without it.
.
All the panels (except for the curved section) are exactly the same size making production easy.
.

.
The upper shelves in the doors is great for smaller books or Objects D’art.
.

.
.

.
Here is the alternate drawing without the curved section. It looks kind of plain in my opinion.

A mobile bookcase!!! Why am I not surprised that you would “engineer” something that is unique. :)

Gary, this is a very interesting bookcase. It certainly is inspiring. I really like the curved upper section as opposed to the traditional design. I also like the ability to close it. Aesthetically this makes it more appealing.

Very nice!!!

That’s an interesting piece of furniture. The operation reminds me of a traveling wardrobe you’d see in the early 1900’s. Cool.

Very nice Gary!

An indoor Bookmobile!

This shouldn’t be too difficult to build either way.

I kind of like it without the curves only because it looks better closed. But both look great.

Nice Gary. It’s got a real lawyers office/library feel to it with the panels. I like the mobile tool cabinet usability you designed into it. Your drawings are crisp and accurate….they look like mechanical prints..right down to the decimal unit dimensioning! Nice work…

Nice entry Gary! Cant wait to see it finished. What is the lumber of choice for this project?

Hey, isn’t there a Lumberjocks clause that says you can’t win more than one contest in a 12 month period? <grin>

I know we will eventually see the finished project, and I’m confident it’s going to be a beauty!

Jimthecarver – I would use the wood that is always my wood of choice, mahogany.

Don’t know if I’ll build it. I’m actually running out of room in my house for all the things I’ve built.

no room, Gary? No problem—just move it out of the way. It’s on wheels you know (ha oh I am so funny)

I like that the panels are the same for easy production.

This looks like it is going to be a show stopper – The design is magnificent- it reminds me of a museum piece. I am really looking forward to this project becoming reality. Good Luck in your very industrious undertaking!

This is a great looking piece. I can see it teamed with a rolltop desk (on wheels, too, of course).

Your idea of a bookcase on wheels is very novel and the design looks pretty attractive. This model will become very popular in the future constructions of bookcases. Eagerly waiting for the finished product and wish you should win the prize.
