I added on to my home a little over two years ago and wanted to be sure I had a new workshop. I wanted to avoid all the problems I had with all my other shops. that is, not enough light, low ceiling height, poor layout, short outlets and 20 amp breakers.
I built a complete new shop with 12 foot ceilings, special lighting, even heat, AC, only to mention a few of the amenity’s.
I only had a 30×26 space to use so I knew it would be crowded but would make the sacrifice in order to get the other things I wanted. I also could convert my other shop into a a stain shop. By doing this I am able to avoid all the saw dust. This also enables not to have to tie up my main shop every time I wanted to finish a project.
After I completed my extended training in stained glass I converted about half my shop to accommodate my stained glass works and craft.
Although a bit cramped, I find it very functional.
I am very happy with my new shop over all.

Very nice, Dusty. With only 6’ head clearance in my shop, I can appreciate why you went for a high ceiling.

Nice shop! I like how organized you have the folders. I’d be affraid of all the saw dust that would settle in them. I think I see a couple of unfinished clocks on that upper shelf. Best finish those up after you get through with the bench.

Very nice shop you have Dusty. After I retired I added , a 12X25 designated workshop on to a 2 car garage. I really enjoy heading out there, and mostly making things to improve the shop for now. It is heated year round, as I am 150 miles north of you in Duluth, And it’s been cold for two weeks straight. I wish I had the room you had, but am quite satisfied with my setup.

Jack,
I can relate to the cold its been very cold here in Minneapolis also. I am lucky as my shop is both heated and has a/c . I have 2/6 walls fully insulated and 14 foot celiling. Lots of light… and of course every woodworker needs- coffee pot- microwave ,Tv , stereo. computer, scanner, dvd player and ref, – thats a given for all those ball games.

Great eyes you have …. those are unfinished mantel clocks ,( shelf holder- downers) lol yea yea I know I should fiinish them .. there seems never to be enough time. I have another shop located directly behind this one – but I only use that for staining… that one is cramed full of “stuff” to stain, sand, and what not…........ sigh

Hang in there, Dusty. A man of your talents will get that shop emptied in a couple of weeks. LOL. Then you’ll have to start filling it all over again.

In a couple of weeks I am going to be in Las Vegas, the only thing that will be empty will be my pockets. :).
I admit it’s very easy for me to get a number of projects going. I usually don’t let my projects go unfinished for very long. I find it’s easy to loose interest and hard to pick up where you left off. Even if I don’t care for the project – or if the project falls short of my expectations – I still work very hard to complete them.
I have certainly given away a lot of furniture and stained glass in the past. However, I have really made good progress not leaving projects unfinished. I guess with skill level improvement also comes wisdom. I soon realized it’s not productive to leave projects unfinished it’s also very expensive and frustrating.

Great shop Dusty. My wife wants to work with stained glass. I may have to “steal” your glass storage idea.

Great Shop Dusty. I guess I never went looking at it. It seems to be a very useful shop layout

Dado,
Yea right, we all look good for our photo’s right?
:)
Trust me it gets cluttered up and fast. I will say I do try keep it as organized as I can that is a simple fact of having a small shop.
You have to because space won’t allow you the luxury of leaving projects unfinished.
Although, I was giving you a hard time I really do understand and respect how organized your shop is and how hard that is when you have to use it for a garage also.
I am lucky because I have another detached garage for that, then the one attached to my house can be used for a shop only.

I have to keep it clean otherwise we tend to track the sawdust into the house, and then the little missus goes freakin’ ballistic! You know what I’ve been doin’ to make cleaning more quick? I open the garage door and blast it clean with the blower output on my shop vac! Now she’s wonderin’ why her car is always so dusty!
And hey! Look for a Shop Tour at the end of the month!

Hi Dusty
Very nice shop. You are my kind of guy. A place for everything and everything in its place. Hoping to get started on my shop soon. Thanks for inspiration!

Hi Dusty,
I am just now getting around to your shop post so I apologize for the delay. You have an extremely efficient and well organized shop space. And you have a nice set of tools to play with as well, including a television. You have all the comforts of home in there including a bed of sorts under your desk for those late nights in the shop I assume. :)
Thanks for the shop tour, Dusty. I really appreciate it.
Have fun.
