no previous part Part 1 of Some Day I am going to.... series no next part

Fellow Lumberjocks….

I have been part of several projects and had some very unique experiences. My woodworking, stained glass, and various other assortment of hobbies have certainly given me very rich and full filling experiences.

I love what I do and am lucky for the most part I can do what I love.

For that I am great full.

In the back of my mind I am always thinking….(scary I know) about then next project, task, dream, or “honey do list” and what needs to be done.

I am very interested in hearing and curious about what others have ahead of them, are dreaming about or are planing on doing in the future.

These lists can be anything.

They are not limited to just woodworking and can be dreams or desires in the “planing stage” or something that is a definite.

It doesn’t even matter if at the moment you have the money, skills, time or the blessing of others for these dreams or projects.

I am interested only in what others are “thinking” about. In other words, whats on your mind,

This is a chance and maybe even an opportunity and I am hoping it may help others to create, expand, commit to or even become inspired to build, finish, or finalize future projects.

Things that maybe be on the list for example but aren’t limited to… plans to take classes, buy new tools ,build a piece of furniture, build an addition, take on something new , finish a project, try something you have never did or even tried before.

What ever you are ”dreaming” or ”thinking” about.

Please share it, so we can all see what others are thinking, perhaps even encourage them , or help with with there ideas or dreams.

We can maybe up date, add to or give progress reports from time to time on how we are doing with ”Some Day I am going to…”

Build an tree house on top of my second garage behind my home “This Old Crack House

After I build this ,I am finally going to be able to bring home from my buddy’s farm my pet peacock Tasha.

I have wanted to complete this project for some time. I have the plans for this in my mind and plan on sketching the final project out soon and hope to build this this spring.

This is a high priority project for me.

I already did my first tree house with maple flooring t-111 siding dual-paned windows and lap roofing.

Last month I started Monk Custom Guitar Co. and now I’m working on 4 guitars. Two Bass’ and two 6-strings. Imma be a rich man.

And my living quarters are already over the shop… I’m moving right along.

And some of you knew me when I was working out of my brother-in-law’s garage.

Bryano,

Many of us fellow lumberjocks have been in your position, ( and several still are) with the same dreams and goals.

I’m one of them.

Been there done that.

I know what it feels like to have to go out side to change your mind because of no room. Or, having no heat, light or even the basic simple tools.

The countless hours spent reading and looking at wood magazines, tool advertisements and anything else I could get my hands on.

Never give up on your dreams my friend.

With God Speed may your wish come true.

Obi,

I some how missed that post on the new guitar adventure.

It has got so busy (thats a good thing) I can’t keep up on all the posts in this web site anymore. I do try though the best I can.

I’m very impressed with your new adventure and wish you the best of luck.

Good to hear from you again.

By the way, I have been one of those around long enough to remember when you did lwork out of your brother in law’s garage.

Isn’t it fun to look back and see how far you have come?

Keep the spirit.

Someday is hopefully here!

I’ve recently started a “how to” website http://woodworkingtipsfrompop.com/ dedicated to my father, (partner, best friend and mentor!) It is based on our experiences on building bars, libraries, stairs, mantels, trim work, shop work, etc. We have a small family business (4 1/2” employees) located north of Atlanta GA, and the demand for such a site has increased with the growing number of do-it-yourselfers calling me for appointments to steal my time! (Drives me Crazy!) I know I’m in trouble the moment they start showing me all the furniture they built.
This site was conceived less then 2 months ago on an air plane down to Florida. I started it the moment I got home and it’s been on my mind ever since. Our plane landed at 9pm and I had a blogspot by midnight!

“I have a ton of work to do and more to learn!” but, I’m up for the task. I just purchased a video camera and will be posting some video real soon! I’m looking forward to having a lot of fun with this site!

interesting question and a good strategy: put it in writing and make it real!!
1. my backyard becomes a luscious retreat area
2. I get some interest in some books I’ve written and am about to write
3. finish making my living room a cozy place to sit
4. fix my kitchen cupboards and drawers so they close (and turn it into a Petticoat Junction kitchen)
5. make some very cool project with wood and my deerhides. (haven’t come up with a project yet)

Someday I’m gonna retire. Eventually we all have to. Hopefully, I’ll be in the best of health as I hope you are too. And when I retire, I’m gonna continue woodworking. I want to turn some bowls. Nice ones. And then, I’m going fishing and camping. And when I’m idle, I hope to still be here on LumberJocks, as I hope you are too.

Congrads…..... and good luck.

I am a big supporter of any entrepreneurial adventures. Having been and to a certain degree still self employed both as an independent inspector and my occasional rehab house and limited side commissions in woodworking and stain glass.

I see the passion in what your doing.

Debbie,

I use writing goals and dreams down as a way that not only seems to help myself enter into a written contract to do or complete something, I also use it as a way to help focus and refine what ever my vision, dream, or thoughts are at the time.

Works well for me.

Lumberjocks,

I want to someday…....

Write a complete blog series about , with illustrations and video showing others how I buy old homes and remodel these projects in a timely and cost effective manner .

Of course I will use extensively all my blunders and mistakes as a launching pad for ”How to Buy and Remodel Homes for Dummies like Me 101”

I want to write a plain straight forward guide, easy to read and understand common sense outline of the steps to buying and doing the various remodeling steps it takes to complete these projects and either live in or resell.

Dadoo – 12 comments back, you mention being idle at sometime in the future. Are you suggesting that’s part of retirement? <grin> There’s no sign of it here yet!
Some day I’ll say to folks: “Sorry, can’t do that for you; I want to do a little job for myself” Maybe I won’t.
Some day I’ll start using my pile of jigs to make my acoustic guitar.
Someday I’ll start my replica Roman plane.
Someday I’ll turn this brand new 1.5 hp electric motor into a thicknessing sander.
Someday I’ll wire up my kiln & do some pottery.
Someday I’ll break down some brick walls that hamper progressin my family history research.
Enough already

Some day I am going to…

finally sort, clean out, repair, sell, and organize all those “extra tools” that I have collected over the years and take up room in my shop….

I have never or rarely used these tools…. however I am sure “i had to have them” I certainly couldn’t pass them up they were on sale” ... besides I saw them on a national woodworking show or magazine….

They are collecting dust and taking up valuable space… time to change that

Oh yes, you remind me Dusty, I’m going to renovate the C19th toolchest I bought at auction, and put my older tools in it to keep them out of the dust. And then there’s the second one I bought. Not that I needed two (or even needed one), but buying the second one brought down the average price I’d paid for the two.

My wife’s great over that sort of thing. She asks three questions: “Do you want it; can you afford it, and do you have somewhere to keep it?” If yes, yes, yes – then get it!

lazyfiremanintn,

:)

Well last spring I did some down sizeing ( clearly enough ) and did get rid of a lot of “excess baggage”.

One of the interesting things I found is how many tools I “thought I couldn’t live without” when I first started I rarely use now.

I also found it embarrassing how many tools I never really mastered or really never used to their full potential.

These facts were a real eye opener.

I certainly have altered my tool buying habits and learned a lot from that experience.

So Dusty finished “this old crack house”—didn’t learn his lesson; jumped right into “this old mold house” – didn’t learn his lesson, obviously, because no sooner is he done (I’m assuming that job is done) he has a list of “to do” things that is never-ending and quite intensive sounding!! :)

Debbie,

I do have a lot on my drawing board right now. As always so much depends on time. I really have several projects I want to do and will get around to doing some day. I have some surprises coming for you soon.

Mum is the word.

I can’t give away the blog ending I am doing right now “This Old Mold House”.

I also have some other blog series I have been working on that include several other projects and plans.

Oh and how is that “learning my lesson” working out for me?

Yea, about that…

Not so good.

I am still building things and doing other over the top projects.

Oh well, shrug, some of us never learn!

Where to start.

1) Get off my duff, stop dreaming/planning and start doing
2) build a router table. First thought was buy, but after looking here and else where, I figure it would be more rewarding to build one. Would also help with refinging the skills and #1 aad #3
3) requested custom picture frame (by wife) for mothers day gift for mother in law.
4) Closet orgnizer (mine)
5) buy brad nailer (on x-mas list)
6) disassemble/remove current “workbench/storage” area in the garage (was there when we bought the house) and replace with cabinates that would be more functional/useable
7) finish dawer project that I started this summerbut never finished. We have a cabinate that was just a Home Depot / Lowes sink base, that was originaly bought as extra kitchen storage in the last house we rented, and now is in the same role in the current houe we bought. Needless to say sink bases have 2 “false drawers” that are just mounted to the case, and we always need storage. I made 2 new drawers, but did so with out reading the instructions on the glies as to spacing, and needed to re-work them. drawer 1 is complete, but drawer 2 is still “in progress”

CoolDavion,

What a great and fun list of projects to start on.

I find myself asking the same question as you did.

“Where to start”?

Every time I arrive at the same answer.

The beginning.

Really I found it doesn’t matter where you start as long as you do.

The sooner I get started the sooner I can finish and enjoy the projects.

I also found the as I completed each project not only did I gain self confidence, I also felt a sence of accomplishment.

Good luck with your projects.

Someday I’ll:
1) Take classes in using Dreamweaver. Develop web pages.
2) Get a design job, so I no longer have to attend to the piddly aspects of my toy job (for about 5 years all I did for my current employer was do design work for people – invitations, contracts, wedding and funeral announcements, advertisements, magazines. I was challenged and happy to go to work everyday).
I’m good at what I do. Now I have to muddle through a very toxic work environment where I count beans and pay attention to the increasing list of arbitrary rules and infractions (This label must be here, this packaging must be thus and so, audit this, report on that – oh and can you design this, too – we can’t figure out how.)
3) Live someplace warm, or at least have a warmed shop
4) Teach myself inlay and marquetry
5) Get to know my grandson as he grows
