Well, my wife and I went to Kansas City today to visit some friends that moved their this past summer. I recently gave them a cutting board listed as a project here, and like cajunpen suggested they don’t want to use it. We spent a good part of Saturday at the Nelson-Atkins Museum and it is worth the trip. The museum was very impressive. My wife being an artist loved it and so did I. The collection was extensive and the new addition the Bloch building was awesome. I did however want to post one of my findings at the museum here on lumberjocks.
In one of the galleries I stumbled on a very impressive piece of furniture. It was a bookshelf/desk made in Germany and was very impressive piece of marquetry. It was made of walnut and pine for the body of the piece and the marquetry was done with walnut, ebony and “fruitwoods” which I believe to be a term used when the other woods are not identified. I have included some pictures of the work here and I hope you enjoy them.

Great pictures. I’ve not been there to the gallery in a while. My wife goes every couple of years. She going to KC this wed for 2 weeks.

Alex I sure wish that you had taken some dimensions – I would have loved to reproduce that piece :-)). It is beautiful, can’t imagine how someone develops that much talent.

Alex, did you go see the full sized replica of the Buddhist temple there? The hand-carved “lucky” cricket cages there are also wonderful.
What a great museum. I’ll have to go back soon as I was not consumed by the woodworking mania the last time I went.

I which I got some dimentions as well. Unfortunetly, we only spent an afternoon at the museum, when we could have spend days looking at the different artwork.

Alex, thanks for showing us this piece. It is fantastic. The dimensions appear to be about the same as most of the Philadelphia type secretaries. Bill, you could just start from there. I’m not sure I would want to try to reproduce that piece. I don’t think I would live ling enough to finish. It is wonderful.
