I am 38, love the outdoors, just got a shop set up I have been dreaming of for years. 24x24 that doubles as toy storage. I sell Real Estate for a living after having built homes for many years where I obtained what woodworking (mostly cabinet making) experience that I do have but I would consider myself an amateur woodworker as I have not had a real shop of my own before I grew up with a dad and grandfather who were woodworkers (dad built homes as well but had a wood shop for work and a hobby) and have inherited most of my good hand tools (planes and saws) and cabinet and furniture making days were more than a decade ago. I have done a lot of finish work and a few furniture pieces (all the way back to high school) I have done a few cabinet jobs but hung more craftmaid cabinets than Drew-made... I purchased a unisaw, delta 18 inch bandsaw, 8 inch parallelogram powermatic jointer, a new Powermatic drill press, and a delta 13 inch planer as well as a porter cable 220 volt compressor this year and some other tools this year... Been saving (and plotting for a long time) the last few years have been filled with building what I could with my portable tools (contractor table saw, compound mitre saw etc.) swearing because I did not have the equipment I wanted and planning what I would get and how I would make it all work when the time came... I do sell Real Estate but drive a truck still... and always have paint, stain or slivers on or in my hands... You just never grow out of it I guess. It will be an exciting year for me in the shop. (between all the fishing and Ranger riding.) I am married and have 2 small girls.

Thanks guys (And Gal), I am excited about the shop… It actually is not TOTALLY set up yet… They hung the sheetrock yesterday. We have a 2 car garage and I built another 2 car garage as a shop but I have a small fishing boat, the Polaris Ranger and my kids little chinease ATVs that have to go in there as well but I think I figured out how to store the tools all the way around the sides in a way that will work and they are all on mobile bases. I built drops into the ceiling for power and lets see I also purchased a wall mounted shop vac with a 1 inch hose that I can use for the small tools and have a shop vac for the big ones but a Delta dust collection system may be in my future… I also have a delta scrollsaw and the planer is DeWalt not delta… Just posted in the middle of the night. I grew up in a home with a wood shop so this is something I have wanted for along time. However my wife said no more debt for this so I had to save up the money for the building and I thought I had extra saved but Real Estate prices have zoomed in the past 2 years here and thus labor for the tradesmen went way up… So I did a lot of it myself. I have attic trusses so I have an apartment upstairs which means plumbing and I did that myself (put a shop sink in as well so I can clean my dutch ovens outside and wash the glue off my hands.) I have some projects in mind to break in the new tools but may need to try something a little less ambitious to cut my teeth with. I need to build a wall of bookshelves downstairs in the house and I need to build an entertainment center. Both may be too exciting to begin with. So I am looking for something else I need for inspiration and to get me going. I think I have all the big tools Ill need… now I need to figure out what I have to have that I dont with the basic hand tools. Chisels, Planes etc… and think a small project will help to identify the deficientcies in that department. Dr. Sawdust… you are welcome here… I like the look of your cherry bookcase! If you showed up tomorrow it would be dissapointing though… and if you show up within the next couple of months you will find a shop full of tools with no sawdust. (Like a showroom) I gotta get some use on these fine machines. BTW anyone have any great non paint ideas for sealing the shop floor?

Thanks,

Drew

Welcome Aboard Drew. We are looking forward to seeing pictures of that shop when its set up.

As for floors, I have seen there are some rolls of a thick tough plastic you can roll out and cover your floor. I have seen the rolls at Costco, as well as some advertisements online. I also saw a video of someone that put some locking squares down as well. I do not remember the product or even where I saw the video, but I bet a search on the internet will produce some hits. I just remember the squares were kind of expensive compared to an epoxy covering. Of course you could always build a raised wooden floor with your dust collector hooked up to pull out the dust that falls through. It would be like a large downdraft table! :)

Good luck and let us know what you do.

P.S. – you better get that shop finished so you can participate in the Thorsen House Table challenge.

I actually sort of know that… I have been waiting for so long (literally browsing through timberline tools which is right down the road from my office) for 5 years but I had no place to put the equipment. I don’t even have all of it on-site but it is paid for. I have been selling houses 80 to 100 hours per week for 13 years with very little in the way of time off and I got pretty good at it but need some hobbies to work the stress out and so it is this, fishing & camping with the 4 wheelers. My kids are getting old enough they need more time with daddy so I need to work less but would go stir crazy sitting around at home with nothing to do. Thus the need to find something to do here so daddy is home and available but mentally occupied.

Look at that… I was memorable… I was Nicole’s 5th Post!.... Nicole…I bet it is fun to become a rock star couple for a select few. Great to see you. I really wish I had more time there. It was my plan to spend the entire time at the show but then I ended up with this other convention on top of this one… I guess I will have to watch the festool domino podcast to really see Mark demo the thing as I did not have much time… you know… 8 hours there and I never found the Fine Woodworking booth!

haha don’t worry Drew I never found it either! I think it was in the other section of the conference center. I found out on the 3rd day the hall was split into 2!
