Outdoor "Coffee" Table #7: Tapers and Tenons

« Part 6: Mortises Part 7 of Outdoor "Coffee" Table series Part 8: Closing In On It... »

This is a one-handed post tonight; I had a bit of an accident, but I’ll get to that…

We’ll keep with the chronology.

I was able to get back to work on the table after about ten days away from it. My goals were to taper and mortise the legs and to cut the tenons for all top members. Here’s what I was able to accomplish…

Tapers cut on the table saw…very slow going and quite a bit of burning:

At the bench – I used the #4 set lightly to get the darkest of the burn marks out, followed by the #80 cabinet scraper, which really did the trick. Don’t think I’ll even sand the legs:

Finally, I was on track to cutting all the tenons (I had another couple hours of shop time on the ticker), when halfway through I jabbed myself with a chisel in my left hand (which I was using as a clamp while trimming up a test piece). Not sure I even want to say how deep it went! The chisel read like an oil dipstick. Worst “cut” I’ve given myself – let’s just leave it at that! This is where the progress stopped today, and my hand’s wrapped up for the night:

Maybe I’ll have to try some one handed woodworking tomorrow…

Clean it up good, and get some rest. Hope your Tetanus shot is up to par. Wishing you a speedy recovery.

Dorje,

Sounds like a case of the right hand not knowing what the left hand is doing.

Be sure get the doc to give it a good look. I think there’s wires and everything in there!

I know the throbbing that goes along with such an injury.

Maybe you’ll be better off not to try one handed woodworking! Maybe, take a break?

Hope all goes well at the doc’s.

(Nicest legs I’ve seen, made out of wood anyway!)

Dorje, I with Lee, I don’t think onehanded wood working is a good idea. I hope the chisel was sharp. They heal quicker if the knife is sharp. Isn’t that a comforting thought as it throbs away all night.By the way, great gams!!!

Dorje,

So sorry to hear about your accident. That is one of the sobering realities of our craft – that we can hurt ourself at any time. I’ll pray for your quick healing, so you can get back at this with two hands.

The legs look great! You probably don’t need to sand them, since that will only scratch the beautiful shine they have on them.

Dorje – Looks like the project was coming along nicely until the chisel decided not to play fair. Hope your hand heals soon, would like to see your finished project.

Yow, I think it’s all too easy to forget that our hand tools are every bit as dangerous as their powered brethren. Something about their unassuming silence lulls you into thinking they’re your friends…. I’ve done the old chisel into the hand trick once or twice myself, definitely smarts (not quite as much as a finish nail shot into your thumb with an air nailer though.. sigh)

Ouch! Heal well. I just missed a chisel accident of my own last night. I was moving some things around the shop and a chisel rolled off the table. I didn’t even see it. It sliced through the tip of my sandal and stuck into the floor. 1/2” to the rear and I would have lost my middle toe.

The table is looking great….I hear blood makes a nice stain…..I wonder how many pieces of furniture out there have some of the maker’s DNA built in.

didn’t the “red violin” use blood in the stain?

I missed this yesterday, Dorje. How’s your paw feelin’ today? I hope the soreness goes away soon.

Nice cleanup with the planes. I agree with you. Doesn’t look like it will need sanded. Nice work.

The paw is swell at this point – a bit sore on the inside yet, but in good shape overall! Thanks for asking!

I’ve been gone camping – two trips over the last week – and am just trying to get caught up here on LJ…

Thank goodness we had a layover at home after the first three days and I was able to keep my head above water by checking out Pulse!

Ahh, camping. One of my other great loves. I get to go visit my best friend in Denver over Labor Day so I excited. I didn’t go once last year. THAT’s a shame.

Glad your hand is healing well. You’ll be in top form very soon I’m sure. (No doubt the fresh air and relaxation helped.)

I just reviewed your pics again. I think someone else commented on this before but man, those are some really nice, sharp photos. Very appealing.
