Hi David,

As a self-employed tax pro who used to be a spreadsheet jock for The Man, I sympathize with your plaint about sitting in front of that damned computer for your new-found hobby as well as your unreal “other life”. Reading about the European, mainly German and Danish, apprenticeship system for cabinet-makers, one thing that they now require of woodworking apprentices is skill in some kind of CAD system. At least when it’s your “real calling”, you have a choice. Otherwise, if you go to school for your hobby, the community / industiral arts colleges are likely to put your round peg into an uncomfortable and costly square hole called AutoCAD.

Knowing that, I’m quite thankful for Sketchup. I’m also quite thankful for the opportunity to choose something I found I can work with which is light on my bank account.

Welcome to the site and I also hear you about sitting in front of the PC all day I am lucky in that I check the site during the day from work between jobs and it makes the day go a bit easier. Enjoy and have fun.

David, Welcome to lumber jocks :-) I can sympathize with you on the dis-interest in technology when you walk out of the office at the end of the day. I am a Systems Administrator/Analyst for a large HOA management firm(Based in Dallas… but we have an office in Houston as well…)

Sitting in front of a computer is indeed the last thing on my list of things I’d like to do in my free time… In fact, you’d be surprised how many people on this site are in high-tech fields. There’s something about the low-tech nature of woodworking that attracts us. We don’t generally have an abundance of tangible work we do, so it’s nice to be able to unwind by producing objects we can actually interact with… things that those in this world who are less technically inclined can also have an appreciation for…

Well enough of my rant here… :-) WELCOME! I guarantee you won’t find a better bunch of folks anywhere else on the net… These guys(and gals) are indeed the cream of the crop when it comes to providing information and guidance to those of us new to the hobby…

You are in good company. there are a number of us Techies into woodworking. Most of us are highly creative. The Woodworking gives me something I can both create and touch (unlike software)
