I'm 37 with a wife and 2 kids. I became interested in woodworking out of the necessity as a teenager to build speaker boxes that would shake the daylights out of my Chevy S10 blazer. Now I'm just content with building an occasional bookshelf or project that piques my interest. I've grown into being a DIY'er. I'm always thinking to myself on how i could make something better, more efficient, or somehow improve on a design. My hobby used to be computers, but I turned that into my profession so now my interests are woodworking, golf, fantasy football, guitar, and Dave Ramsey financial principles. I know, I'm all over the place and have too many interests, but thats me.

I just bought a new kraig pocket hole jig setup and I’m having a problem. The first project that I attempted was to build a face-frame for a cabinet using some hard maple. I must be doing something wrong because the drill gets way too hot, smoke starts coming out of the jig and so on. So I varied some things, tried removing the drill and blowing the jig out frequently with an air compressor. I eventually had to resort to cooling the bit in water every so often. I also slowed the speed of the drill down, but that made the process much more time consuming. I’ve done several internet searches and haven’t found anyone with this issue so I thought i would post it and see if anyone else has had this problem and can offer any ideas.

Darren,

Your question will get more read more if you post it as a forum topic.

I have a Kreg set-up that is about 5 years old and have never had any problems with it. To me it sounds as if your bit is dull and should be either sharpened or replaced. Since you bought it new I would talk to the seller about replacing the drill bit. Or if you can’t get any help from them contact Kreg and see if they will replace the bit. The guide comes with a lifetime warranty and Kreg does have a 30 day complete satisfaction guarantee.

Hope this helps.

Thanks Scott…Ah ha, not only do we have forum posting ability, but also ability to post comments to homepages much like a myspace for woodworkers. It takes me a while, but I catch on eventually.
