It’s been 198 days since my last post here. I’ve been pumping out entries on my other two weblogs, but I’ve been doing precious little woodworking, whence the lack of updates here.
I picked up a consulting gig that let us move faster than we expected on buying a house (in Northern California, gulp), so we’ve gone from tools stored in a closet and moved out into the living room to having a small one car garage in which to set up a shop, and a whole house worth of cool projects to attack.
Of course that’s also meant two jobs.
So now we’re in the new house. It’s got a kitchen that was clearly built in 1947 for one person who ran the place. It’s got some things in the bathroom that need updating. And we need to do a bunch of built-ins.
I was working on a few things as I started to get the tools out and set up, trying to make up a new cutting board for the slide-out section in the kitchen, and after my grumblings there and various visits to kitchen design shops and discussions about what we wanted to build, my (wonderful amazing) sweety said “we need to get a Domino”. So last night we drove up to the local Festool dealer to pick up a Domino, and she said “we should also get a planer”, so we put a Domino and a Dewalt 735 in the car last night. That’s why I married her.
Well, that and the tax breaks.
And, I bought 225 board feet of maple off of Craigslist to do various projects. I truly have no excuses.
My Dad’s visiting this weekend (he’s at a conference in Napa, tonight we’re going to drive over there to drag him out to dinner at Uva where a friend of ours is playing in a band there (Gentlemen of Jazz), I’ll get his help unpacking the new toys.
So, next up is a new bathroom vanity, and we start on kitchen cupboards and cabinets.

Glad you are back as well. But of course with all there is to do around the house it may be a little difficult to make some posts. Although this is a great opportunity to detail the step by step progress on a particular remodel- something which I find interesting.
Keep the posts coming.

Man, you’ve got yourself a real ‘keeper’ in the Mrs.
Good luck updating everything that needs updating, built, designed,
pieced together, etc. Sounds like you have a lot of fun in the works.

Dan, it’s good to hear from you again. I am glad your wife supports you like mine, though mine only did so after I turned out a few nice things. Keep us posted on how your projects go.

Thanks, all…
Craigslist has come through in a big way, my garage, and now my attic crawl space, have about 225 bd feet of Maple, about 64 bd feet of birch, and now, after the last few days, if I can safely cut apart these mahogany box beams I’ve just acquired, holy cow, I just calculated it out, a bit under 200 board feet of mahogany.
I think the current plan is a birch bathroom vanity, mahogany baseboards, and maple kitchen cabinets with mahogany panel and maple framed doors…
Gonna be a busy summer if I can reduce my working hours to a single job…
