Wood Scrap Box #3: One more slight adjustment

« Part 2: Measure twice, cut once Part 3 of Wood Scrap Box series no next part

Well, the jewelry box is assembled and now complete. I assembled everything and did one final trial assembly, including mounting the doors. The hinges were neatly mortised and the doors were perfectly aligned – 1/16” space on all sides. I opened the doors and discovered the drawings behind the doors lacked a shy 1/16” of clearing the hinges. Rats. So… I filled the mortises on the back of the doors and doubled the depth of the mortises in the casing. The doors are not quite as nicely centered anymore, but the drawers now clear the hinges.

My wife is very pleased with the jewelry box and my daughters are wondering when they get their own.

I bet your wife is very happy. Excellent job! I really like the drawers and trim.

That is a really nice box. I am sure that you purposefully only made one box so that you could be persuaded to spend some more time in the shop making two more boxes. Nice thinking.

The pakuk makes a bold statement in the box and your maple enhancement is a nice element as well.

How did you finish it?

The finish is simply several coats of Formby’s high gloss tung oil, with 0000 steel wool between coats.

Man, that is a nice jewelry box. I’m not surprised she’s pleased.

Without a doubt, a very nice jewelry box. And I can see why your daugthers want one of their own.
