Wife wants carpet, Cherry has to go

Blog entry by Coup posted 112 days ago 324 reads 0 times favorited 21 comments Add to Favorites

Two years ago I had about 1000bf of cherry cut for hardwood floors in my old farmhouse. The wife hates cold floors and has not budged on wanting carpet. I’m no woodworker by any means so It’s got find a new home. I live near Rochester in New York. I have no idea what it is worth. All I know is that there are no knots, it air dried for two complete summers in my barn and all of the boards are 1” thick and 6” wide.

Shipping to the left coast would kill me, otherwise I’d be on this like a bulldog.

Wow, think of the possibilities! I’m extremely jealous of whoever picks this up.

Likewise… I’ve found the hardwood pickings here in the middle of the desert to be rather slim…. The dealers that are around have sub-par lumber at premium prices… Too bad you’re not in say… California, Arizona, or Utah… I’d be there with a truck/trailer and a fistful of cash by nightfall.

same with me as the previous to. shipping would kill. i do have to order away for my wood as the big city isn’t the best place to get exotics, only the regulars. thanks for the post though. I’m sure that someone will pounce on it!

Wish I could buy, but I’m trying to use up what I have before I move. Most retailers are charging $7-10 per board-foot for good cherry. Your problem is that you’re near Buffalo, which is a large lumber selling area (who knew, right?). If your cost was less than mentioned above and you can get away with selling it for around $5-6 per board foot, you could get rid of it fairly quickly. Another question would be, do you need a tax wirte-off? If you don’t need the cash right away and would like to take a wack out of your taxes, donate it to your local highschool wood shop and ask for a receipt detailing the full $10 per board foot retail cost, plus transportation, and storage costs. Could be a win-win for you and the community. BTW, GO BILLS!!!!

Time to trade in the wife ;-)

Just kidding. Another idea is to see if there is a habitat for humanity who would like to have it or maybe there is a local architectural salvage place.

You’re 6.5 hours away from me. If I had cash, I’d be there at lightspeed.

Wide cherry that’s aged that well is hard to find.

I would sell it for 6$ a board foot. Not looking to get rich. This is nice stuff and anyone loading it doesn’t like a board I’ll just set it aside. Don’t have to sell the whole lot to one guy either. If anyone just needs only 250 board feet then that is fine too. Not to many people have 6k to just drop on wood. Just hope to see it go to good use. Anyone seriously interested I can e-mail pics of it.

Leave the Cherry down and carpet over it. Then once you tire of the carpet, spill a few gallons of koolaide on it. Tell her you can either spend the money to get new carpet again or you can just pull it up and have the beautiful Cherry again. :)

And Betsy’s right. Slippers are warmer, cheaper, and look better on wood than carpet. :)

What looks really nice is if you cut the carpet smaller than the floor and have the edges finished so that you can show some nice hardwood along the edges, kinda like a giant area rug.

How about installing radiant heating under the hardwood, so you will have the best of both? And save moving.

Thanks for all the ideas. I really like the idea of the radiant heat in the flooring so I get my cherry floors and the wife has warm floors. That is a win, win. I think this is going to happen. All I have to do is run the pex tubing in between the floor joist and hook the water up to that instead of the baseboard. Now I have two projects.

I’m confused …has it already been installed or is it still in your barn ?

Cherry is in the barn at this point. I have to get it checked for moisture and see if it needs another year in the barn to dry. Hopefully it is good to go and I will install the radiant heat in the floors in the next few months.
