Part 1: I finally decided to enter!
I wasn’t planning on entering, but yesterday the bug bit me. I usually like to use the material I have on hand, & I couldn’t find a 2×4, so I decided to make a box. I drew up a pattern of what I wanted to make, & proceeded on my adventure. That’s all I’m going to show you today is a picture of the piece of wood I’m using. After all, this is top secret! Part 2: The start of my, "Not any kind of box"
I said I wasn’t going to enter, but I opened up the latest issue of “Woodworkers Journal,” They had a centerfold of how to make a bandsawn box. I read it over, & right away I thought, there’s something I can try, & make one for the L J’s contest. Part 3: More of My "Not just any box"
Well I got a little more accomplished. I did a little design change today, I removed what I called the chin at the bottom side of the heart. I held a piece of stiff sand paper, & drew a cutting line, then proceeded cut off the chins.~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~Note; the cut off line. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ A big improvement with no chins. Part 4: A few more pictures
I finished sanding the exterior portion of the box down to 320 grit. Then applied one coat of mineral oil. Boy did that make the grain standout. I used Mineral Oil because it has no affect on Barb’s allergies. Otherwise it would have to stay out in my shop for a month. Part 5: Making the drawer
This afternoon I went out, started working on the drawer. It sure felt good to be back in the shop again. This really helps shorten the winter. Who cares about going South with the birds, when you have a nice warm shop.~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~I adjusted the bandsaw table, sawed the ends to about 3/8” thick. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~Then I taped a tapered cut off to the heart, so I could get a 90 degre...
Part 6: Carving drawer handles
Yesterday afternoon, I shifted my gears into the carving mode I decided to make drawer handles, & decided that a small rose would look kind of nice. Actually, to tell you the truth, I had made that decision when first designing the box.~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~First I picked out a piece of cut off, & drill 3 holes with my plug cutter. These plugs will later be used to hold the rose while caving, & also for fastening to the drawer front. ...
Part 7: Carving Roses wasn't very Rosie!
The first Rose handle I carved, didn’t give me any trouble, but I wasn’t satisfied with the light color of the sapwood. So I decided to go with the darker heartwood. I cut some rose patterns for a couple of Roses. I started carving a couple of flower petals, & snap! the flower broke off of the 3/8” stem. So I decided to go with a 1/2’’ stem, & the same thing happened, SNAP! The burly heartwood is kind of brittle. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~...
Part 8: The Box is done, BUT!!
I completed the box yesterday, but I’ve been struggling to get my camera to work. All of the light areas of an image have a pink tinge, & I can’t edit the pink out. I even tried taking pictures outside, but it was even worse. Here’s an out door picture, Blah!! Maybe someone has a cure for this disease.
