Yesterday afternoon, I shifted my gears into the carving mode
I decided to make drawer handles, & decided that a small rose would look kind of nice.
Actually, to tell you the truth, I had made that decision when first designing the box.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
First I picked out a piece of cut off, & drill 3 holes with my plug cutter. These plugs will later be used to hold the rose while caving, & also for fastening to the drawer front.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
I measured where the center of the plugs were, & pinned the pattern in place.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
I drew an extra one just in case.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
I sawed out the three blanks.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Then I cut into the plugs, so I’d have a handle on the blanks.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
I made a jig, so I could hold them in the vise. I drilled a 3/8” hole, then sawed down through the center of it. I just came up with this method of holding a small object. It may be , & old method, but it’s the first time I’ve tried this, it works great
Its funny, when I tried putting a plug in the hole, it wouldn’t fit. I had accidentally made the plugs 1/2” instead of 3/8”, so I had to resize the plugs, LOL
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
The first blank ready for carving.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Partially carved Rose. I start on the outside, & carve one petal at a time, gradually working toward the center .
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Completed drawer handle!
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
That’s all for today, more to come.

Great technique Dick. I like the fence on your bandsaw, nice piece of equipment. I sense this project will be something special.

Carvers always make it look so easy, but I’ve never found it so. That method for creating the plugs is really clever. I look forward to seeing he finished job Dick.

Did you make the fence for your saw or did it come with it.? Great illustration in sequence and everything you’re getting to be quite the producer. Nice rose. mike

Mike’
the fence came with it, & its real sturdy. If you notice the two slots, it comes with a guide post that bolts to it, for following an identical curved piece.

Hi Dick;
Very imaginative!
I’m still not sure those are your hands though. LOL
Great idea, and your method is very clever.

Thank you Lee,
When I look at the picture, I have a hard time believing they’re mine. When I worked for a living in the grease,&
grime of equipment as mechanic, my fingers were always full of cracks, & scars filled with diesel soot.
It took 17 years to heal them. LOL
I’d like also to thank all of you for your kind comments.
